And , those same junk sellers had better watch out some months hence or they will be run ning, along with the rest of us innocent victims, from the metal faster than they are going for it now. At first they probably won't recognize the old scrap boilers, kitchen stoves, plow parts, car frames and other accessor ies from head to tail lights, aluminum, copper, brass, and other metals converted into shiny implements of war and being us- I ed ruthlessly in the hands of foriegn pow ers. The junk seller's lust for .the dollar , will be changed to a holler. People who paid to have "the mess" haul ed into the woods or to the nearest junk 1 piles a few months or years ago are now 1 paying far more to get it hauled back to their premises so they can turn it into filthy lucre from the highest bidder!. In scouring the country, junk hunters disregard all property rights and take what , they find where they find it, reviving the Bpirit of the damyankee Carpet Baggers in the post Civil War days. Foreign buyers are paying now; all of us may be paying later . HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS The Zebulon Record By the biggest vote ever given to any constitutional amendment the Homestead Tax Exemption was voted by the people in the last general election. The Legislature has already voted business men a total of $1,200 exemptions on holdings: S3OO on mon ey in hand; S3OO on accounts receivable; S3OO on notes and mortgages; and S3OO on foreign stocks. None of these were submit ted to the people. Now the home owners ask for a similar exemption on their homes. The constitu tional amendment provides for as much as SI,OOO exemption, but only S3OO is being asked at this time. We believe this mandate of the people should be approved. It is fair and just to grant home owners one ex emption to 4 for business men. The Leg islature should provide for this. The American Bar Association ; reports that a poll of its members shows them 8 to 1 against it, a remarkable ratio,'; which would be even more remarkable _if | J the members of the American Bar Associa-!;; tion had not, as The Philadelphia Record reports, voted in an unofficial poll Ijefore last ;; November's election 8 to 1 against Roose- •; velt. The American Bar Association, which has '! a Liberty Leaguer for its president, is a ;; great organization. And in connection with' • • its present opposition to Roosevelt's court ! plan, it is interesting to recall with Sena- ; tor McCarran, of Nevada, that in 1921 it ; advocated increasing the number of Supreme ! Court justices to 11. Perhaps, as Senator ; McCarran says, "The association may have * had more confidence in the administration in ■ power at that time, since Warren Harding m was President and Harry Daugherty was Attorney-General." That was when the packing was going on that preceded the necessary unpacking now. MATHEMATICS AS RELATED TO PRESIDENT'S COURT PROPOSALS The Union Herald Judson King, probably America's great-' est pamphleteer, is out with a brochure entitled "The Mathematics of Democracy," j in which he gives very strong support to President Roosevelt's proposals for reform of the federal courts. Here are some of those mathematics: "Five men on the Supreme Court can now ! block any law passed by a majority of the j I 531 members of Congress. "Thirty-three senators can now block the ' submission of an amendment to the Consti-' tution. "Representatives of 2,895,237 people, inj the 13 smallest states, or less than 2.4 per cent of the 122,775,000 population of the United States, can block the adoption of an amendment if submitted." These figures are absolutely correct. . They are also rather staggering. But Mr. King presents a course of action which will overcome even these obstacles. President Roosevelt's plan, Mr. King states, is to freshen the personnel and re form certain procedures of the federal judi ciary system so as to get necessary reforms now. The liberals in Congress and out who ob - ject to the President's Plan want an amend-1 « ment to take away from the federal courts ? j legislative powers which they never should j have assumed. j 3 "Since both these reforms are necessary," 1 - says Mr. King, "why not have both?" Well, why not? It is the sensible way. Why not take it? FOR SALE PURE GEORGIA SYRUP AND MOLASSES WHOLESALE, IN CANS AND BARRELS W. H. DAVIS 329 W. McDonough St. Savannah, G. A.
