PAGE TWO The Rocky Mount Herald Published Every Friday at Rocky Mount, North Caro ttaa, by The Rocky Mount Herald Publishing Company TE> J. GREEN News Editor and Manager M. PACKARD Assistant Editor ■ntered as second-class matter January 19, 1934, at the post office at Rocky M«unt, North Carolina, under the Act of March 3, 1879 Office: Second Floor Daniels Building, Boeky Mount, Edgecombe County, North Carolina •übseription Rates: One Year, 11.00; 6 Months, 60« Advertising rates reasonable, and furnished to pro* pectire advertisers on request JUSTICE HUGO BLACK The News and Observer The motives behind Senator Copeland's effort to smear Senator Hugo Black with the decayed carcass oi' the Ku Klux Klan were too obvious to escape the rebuke which they received on the Senate floor. At one time during recent history it would have been hard for a man to be elect ed to public office in Alabama without the vote of Klan members. Alabama was not the only such State. If there had been any pertinency in Senator Copeland's challenge of his Senate associate's fitness for the Su preme Court on account of an old and too in timate relationship with the Ku Klux Klan. the merits of the point are to be determined not on the question of whether Klansmen were among the Alabama citizens who voted for him, but whether Senator Black himself reflected the racial, religious and political prejudices which the Klan nutured and pro moted. As it happens, the matte rwas pretty well disposed of even before Senator Cope land bethought himself of the usefulness of an anti-Ku Klux speech in New York's forth-coming election. It was disposed of by a man whose opportunity for observation must be admitted and whose antipathy to Senator Black, on political and economic grounds, far antedated Senator Black's ele vation to the Senate by the voters of his State. Grover S. Hall, editor of the Montgomery Advertiser, who never voted for Senator Black, is the man. There was a time, he recalls, when on ly union labor in Alabama took Senator Black's liberal views toward labor seriously. He adds: Now all take his labor views seriously and many who hate him for these views were Klansmen in 1926, but, of course, would not today admit previous Klan affiliation. Only eccentric village char acters now admit that they were once Klansmen, although at one time, due to our minority primary system, the Klan Mangum Warehouse Rocky Mount, Opening Sale For Tobacco Aug. 26 One Week From Now The Two Big MANGUM Warehouses Will Open With The Rocky Mount Tobacc Mar ket For The Beginning of A New Season. MANGUM, Proprietor ruled Alabama as indisputably as Huey Long ruled Louisiana before his death. There was never any fundamental sym pathy between Facist Klansmen and un ion leaders, but there was a time when a shrewd leader could boss both. In 1926, it was freely said that but for the Klan, Hugo Black would not have been nominated. Certainly, but for the support of union labor he would have lost. As a student of his life and career, I can report that never as a public official has he said one word of comfort to a klan-minded citizen. He has never betrayed any of the preju dices commonly attributed t othe old sheet waving Klansmen. , He has never sneered at religious minori ties . . . As a Senator, he has never said a cheap or shabby thing. The comfort for the rank and file of the American people is that Senator Black will bring to the Supreme Cdurt the revitaliz ing humanitarian and intellectual qualities of Holmes and Brandeis. If he had been vulnerable, it may be safely taken for granted that the Tory group in the Senate would have peeled him unmercifully. His confirmation, in so far as one man among nine may serve, is a decisive factor in immediate Supreme Court reform. JUST A PLAIN NUISANCE— Greenville News-Leader The sales tax in North Carolina, termed an "emergency measure" when enacted, is apparently here to stay. Certainly it is if the politicians who run the state have any thing to say about it. Unpopular or not, it's an easy way to raise revenue, and that's about all Raleigh knows or cares about it. Two general assemblies have come and gone since 1933. The last one in keeping with Governor Hoey's pledge to remove the tax from the "necessities:" removed it, that is if you ar e careless about your defini tion of necessity. , . But there is one injustice, which is not only unfair, but perilously close to a plain hofd-up, in the collection of this levy. That is the extra penny on purchases of 10 and 15 cents. Particularly is this galling to pur chasers of cigarettes, and drinks, as well as all others who make small purchases. Tokens for fractions of cents, redeemable at all places of business would take care of this. Until something of this nature is done, thousands will go on paying from five to 10 per cent sales tax, when the law says plainly that three shall be collected. One who has mingled with the species says, "Alligators are harmless as long as their mouths are kept closed." Aren't we all? —San Francisco Chronicle. The two great neglected opportunities in the field of display advertising are the bar ber shop ceiling and the broad back of the trailer.—Milwaukee Journal.
