SUNSET ROCKS By - Mary H. Dupree Perhaps the place of scenic in terest most frequented by Highland ers, and the place most visited by tourists coming into Highlands,is Sunset Rocks. One finds the way by continuing southeast through the main street until well out of town and then taking the marked road to the right. This road leads you up and up, past the stone entrance to a pri vate estate, on up a rocky road, until a parking space is reached. Then a short trail takes you to Sunset Hocks, a broad expanse of rock flung lavishly down the moun tain side. Here an interesting panorama stretches out before you. Around the horizon, like a charmed circle, lie ranges of blue capped mountains. And nestled in the heart of this circle lies the town of Highlands. At first it all seems strange, viewed from this bird’s eye-angle. But soon a red roof top here, or a church belfry there, stands out to give you bearings. As the sun begins to drop be hind the far horizon, these rocks catch the play of its last rays. And with the sun’s decline perhaps a campfire flares up here or there to light the faces of its. ring of picnickers. And as the smoke stren.^^ upward, on the air is borne the aroma of fresh coffee, or of bscon cooking on the grill. One turns re luctantly from such a spot as this.
