THE GALAX NEWS JULY 8. 19^ PAGE h UNITED STATES AIR FORCE STATIONED HERE By - Mary Jo Newton For the past four weeks, Air ForcB personnel and vehicles have been seen daily around town and of course their presence has aroused the curi osity of the people of Highlands- Many people have asked the personnel about their work and have visited the station* Others have inquired around town to gain knowledge of their being here, but others are still curious and wondering about their presence and their work. We wish to take this opportunity, with the cooperation of the United States Air Force, to inform you a- bout the work being done by them and in hopes the information will reach those who are willing to co operate and aid their program. After surveying the surrounding area, Satulah was chosen for the site of the local headquarters» Here, on one of the most scenic mountain views, was established by the United Staes Air Force, a Radio Relay circuit from AoFeB. in Green ville, ScC. to AoF.B. at Nashville, Tenn. This circuit supplies radio, telephone, and teletype communica tions for the l8th Air Force - headquarters at Donaldson A.FoBe, Greenville, S.C, The personnel in charge of this unit are; S/SFT L, Spokas of Chica go, 111., A/IC Richard Cook of Buffalo, N.Yo, and A/IC Richard Patten of Burlington, Vermont. I think I can say-without hesi- tating-that every resident of this community, summer or perma nent, is truly thankful for the complete cooperation for the Mayor and the Board of Commissioners and their satisfactory correction of the dangerous situation.
