MISS SARA GILDER WITHDRAWS FROM GROCERY BUSINESS Miss Sara Gilder, beloved woman of both local people and sianffiier visitors, withdrew from her grocery business this summer season selling to Mr. Phil late, who formerly ran the Highlander Cafe, Miss Gilder was at first unwilling to give h(^r long-established store up but decided she would let Mr, Tate buy it* In 1932, Miss Gilder spent her first summer in Highlands, She occupied other buildings with her grocerj^ business be fore her final buy in 1937 of the recent ly sold building, but is continuing to reside in her cute, neat little apart ment above the store. Her own pet name of Sara Gilder's store was ’’old-fashioned,” She express ed the reason for her windows alwa^^’-s be ing full of very choicc pot plants such as azaleas, geraniams, gardineas, fuschia, and many other colorful flowers, was for the sole enjoyment of ’’people’s pier sure,” Also, for added attractions for masculine friends she had ’’only ver\~ pretty girls” working in the store. Being very active in Highlands* clubs and activities. Miss Gilder has been either chairman or vice-chairman of the Red Cross for a number of years, and has taught Sunday School in the Presbyterian Church in the Beginners* Depoxtment for fifteen years. She was one of the ori ginal Highlands Bridge Club members, a charter member of the Garden Club and is a trustee of the Highlands Community Hos pital, Before making her home in Highlrmds, Miss Gilder lived at Birmingham, /ilabojna where she worked for the U, S, Steel Corp oration in the Welfare Departiaent, Visitors and locrl buyers of Miss Gil der ’ s store shall never forget ’’Felix, ” the black cat which was named from the cat in the funny paper, walking and purr ing around the store as if he ovmed it himself, Ihe Christmas decoration prize given by the Little Theatre was won by Miss Gilder's window decoration several years ago. She had a black tom cat lying on a red cushion in front of a make be lieve fire place of red tissue paper and black andirons. In her own words. Miss Gilder espress- ed her sorrow in withdrawing from the store as follows. ”A great mrny friends have expressed their regret of not having a place to gather and to gossip, where we did so by the window in the suran-er and by the wood stove, at the back of the store, in the winter. She also said that she missed her friends’ closeness in the store.
