Lt» Governer Ernest Vandiver of Georgia
was guest speaker at the weekly meeting
of the Highlands Rotary Club last Tuesday
evening* The Lt* Governor, who is an
active campaigner and personal friend of
Adlai Stevenson, spoke on "States Rights"
and the current change in the thinking of
the judicial branch of our federal govern
ment as concerned with States Rights^ par*,
ticularly segregation*
In addition to the 10 local members
present there wore 21 visitors* The visit

SCOUTIFG IN HIGHLANDS
Troop No. 7 was registered February 28,
1954 after a lapse of two 3/ears, being
sponsored by the Highlands Rotary Club,
liiey picked a leader whom they thought had
nothing else to do except Scout work and
it has been said that the Highlands Troop
is the only troop in North Cejolina with
a fToll tiExO Scoutr.iaster,
We have 32 registered scouts of various
renks froM Tenderfoot to Life Scouts, also
one who has been awarded the God and
Country Award and three others who will be
presented for the seme award in November.
This award is strictly up to the scout
and the Pastor of his Church*
Scouting does not teach any creed, but
tries to iiipress the importance of the
Scout Oath ond Law so that they will take
an active interest in the Scouts Church of

ART EXHIBITION
Draw a big red circle around Wednesday,
July 25, for that is the day when Highlands
will hold its first open art exhibition.
It will be in the Hudson Library, East
Main Street, and will be from 11:00 a.m. to
9:30 p.m*,,,one day only. Here you will
see pictures by artists of international
renown and pictures by amateurs who have a
wonderful time painting or drawing just for
the fun of it. There willbe striking por
traits in oils, done in the traditional
manner, the finished workmanship and per
fection in the smallest detcll are proof
of the years of study and experience of the
professional artist.
There will be water colors vhoao exqui
site charm will delight the eye...etchings
showing an exceptional delicacy of delin^
iation,.,bold charcoal sketches and vivid
