The day began Wednesday morning when early risers began gathering around at various places up town* The first activity of the day was the hog-calling contest and Mrs* Charles Gonslin of Winchester, Tenn. and Highlands, was the winner. 10:30 saw tlie parade as floats and groups made their way through the streets. The Scaly Mountain Boys won the prize for the best float in the parade and the prize for the best group went to the Talbots* Joe Wilson of Boynton Beach, Fin., was judged owner of the finest looking beard. Patched, bearded,and jug-slingin* people crowded the streets all day. High- Irjids wns visited this Dcy by a ”group from outer space”. 'Ihese tourists who ccm© from out«3r space to enjoy Hillbilly Dny coiildnH change their complexion, teeth etc., but they did put cn iiillbilly clothes so as not to be thrown in the "jug”. Hill billy Day in Highlands is becoming known all over, even in outer spaceJi A borbeque brought the morning to a close and before the barbeque was ovtsr approximately 4j700 people had consumed the seventeen hundred poiinds of boneless baby beef, twenty bushels of tomatoes, eighty gallons of pickles, one hundred 3 lb, boxes of potato chips, three hundred twenty-five loaves of bread, two hundred gallons of lemonade. The people seemed to thorouglily enjoy the barbeque lunch. The afternoon was devoted to hillbilly band music. People straggled home for supper be- (con’t, page 7) DONATION TO HOSPITAL Young Victoria and Melinda Russelli ages 9 and 7, daughters of Mr* and Mrs* Sidney K. Russell, being conscious of how badly the Highlands Community Hospital needs money, decided by themselves, that they would just have to do something to help. The girls decided on a ”Circus Party” This met with their parents delighted approval so the girls immediately began making plans for their Circus Party. On Saturday afternoon, July 23, the party took place at ”Blue Heaven”, the home of their parents on Little Yellow Mountain. The party was staged out-of- . (conH. page 7)
