EARLY DAYS OF THE HUDSON LIBRARY

offered Mr, J. Jay Smith, Fbrom other
sources came offers of a lamp, a table and
the mealier furnishings for the small room
which housed the Hudson Library of 1894*
At that time the library was composed of
six shelves of books conteiined within an
old fashioned closed bookcase.
The actual nucleus of the Library was
a box of new books sent down from Mass
achusetts to start a library in memory of
Mrs, ED.la Hudson, who came to Highlands in
jl880 to restore her health* She was a
jwoman of unselfish spirit whose wish was
l"to place good reading matter within
jreach of the communities of this region,"

POSIMASTER TO RESIGN
Charles C, Potts has announced that he
is resigning October 31, after more than
21 years of postal service, Mr. Potts was
acting postmaster from May 16, 1935 to May
15, 1936 and clerk in the post office from
May 16, 1936 to August 31, 1940» He was
appointed postmaster of the Highlands Post
ffice which was effective SQptember 1,
940 and has been serving in this position
since that time.
