EVELYR hiOPE DflniEL S MAIN STREET Historic "Dixie Hall” »>THE COBWEB" An impressive cast of stars has been assembled by M-G-M for its filmization of William Gibson’s best-seller noval, **The Cobweb, ” playing V/ednesday, Sept. 5, at the Galax Theatre, Dealing with the intense drama and conflict of personalities behind the scenes of a psychiatric clinic, the pic ture, filmed in CinemaScope and color, offers an unforgettable gallery of char acterizations, some of them strong and courageous, others weak and conniving— but all brought vividly to life by Rich ard Widmexk, Lauren Bacall, Charles Boy er, Gloria Grahame, Lillian Gish, John Kerr, and Susan Strasberg. The principals of the storj^ are Dr. Stewart Mclver (Richard Widmark), head of The Castle, as the clinic is known, who feels that the patients can best be re habilitated by being encouraged to take over responsibility; his wife, Karen (Gloria Grahame), who is making a last- ditch effort to save their slipping mar riage; Meg Rinehart (Lauren Bacall), the activities director to whom Mclver turns for the warmth and understanding he can no longer find in Karen; Dr. Devanal (Charles Boyer), fromer clinic head whose authority has been t*?ken over by Mclver and Victoria Inch (Lillian Gish), the clinic *s high-haJided business manager, torn between loyalty to her former boss and the new one. The acting in ”The Cobweb” is on a par with the best the screen has ever offered, with Widmark and Boyer as the rival doctors. Miss Bacell as the girl who convinces Mclver that he must set his own house in order before he can become a good psychiatrist, and Miss Grahame as the taut, unhappy wife, ell meriting praise* The celebrated Lillian Gish, in her first appearance on the Metro lot in 27 years, comes close to stealing every scene in which she appears as the sharp- tongued Victoria Inch, ?nd there are two outstanding film debut performances on the pajft of John Kerr ajid Susan Stras berg, respectively. Kerr, who scored on the Broadway stage in "Tea and Sympathy, '• gives a dynamic portrayal of the confused and sensitive Steven Holte, with Miss Strasberg playing the appealing Sue Brett. Franklin, N.
