Early Days of the Hudson Library (Gon*t*) After her death, her sister^ Mrs. Louisa E, Wells of Shortoffj offered the gift to Highlands as the ’*most accessible and central point, only asking that it should bear the name of the Hudson Lib rary as a loving tribute to the noble woman in memory of whom the books were contributed^” The first president of the Association was Mr, S. T, Kelsey, Sr*, the founder of Highlaaids, The compass by which he laid out the town can be seen in its especial niche on the right of the door as one enters the present Library. The late Professor Harbison, father of the two present efficient librarians, Misses Gertrude and Dorothea Harbison, gave the original room which housed the nucleus of the Library and also a box of books from his own collection. This room was a small wing of the first school built in Highlands on the same hill as the ^*Town Clock School.” Some of the early benefits for the Librarj’" included a Ladies Fancy-work Sale in 1895 which netted the sum of $21*88. This amount represented many hours of crocheting, quilting and sewing by those eager to see the Library prosper. A concert was also given in 1895 for the benefit of the Hudson Library. This was performed by a very fine little ama teur string quartet under the direction of Mr. Louis Zoellner which "rendered classical music very pleasantly*” The quotes are from the Library memoirs of the late Mrs. J. Jay SniLth who was one of the most indefatigable early workers for the Library, its President for many years and author of the comprehensive History of the Association.
