'■‘IHE RAIMOTER*'
Ihe gripping story of a smooth-talk
ing con man and the ranch girl he teaches
to be beautiful teeias Burt Lancaster and
Katharine Hepburn in a memorable film,
Hal Wallis' "The Rainmaker," a movie that
may well run off with top screen honors.
Acclaimed, following its preview show
ings, as one of the year's great pictures,
the Paramount release, which opens Tues-\^
day at the Galax Theatre, deserves every’
bit of that praise.
Presenting Burt Lejicaster in a power
ful perfomaance and Katharine Hepburn in
a brilliant portrayal, that ranges from
intense drama to high comedy, the Techni
color film is superb movie fare, as fun
ny as it is moving, as human as it is
magical.
Set somewhere out West, the plot re-
voles around a farming family, a dedi^
cated-bachelor sheriff and the wandering
charlatan who turns their lives upside
down while extracting money from them with
the promise of bringing ra.in to end their
damaging drought, Kis wild gift of gab,
intended to inspire confidence in his
weird rituals, instead brings love to
Miss Hepburn, her younger brother Earl
Holliman and sheriff Wendell Corey, an
adventurous new life to older brother
Lloyd Bridges and father Cameron Pmd.'.-*
homme, and coincidentally a change for
himself.
A rare movie, "The Rainmaker" is trib
ute to the skills of producer Hal Wallis,
director Joseph Anthony, writer N.Richard
Nash and the superlative cast,
