VIRTUE VERSUS VILLAINY
BY - Nick Hodsdon
Are you tired of villains who ar#n*t
really responsible for their evil deeds be
cause deep rooted psychological coiiploxes
from extraneous sources? Have you hunger
ed for a villain who is meen for the sake
of meanness? Then come to the Highlands
Oommunity Theatre and hiss at out own das
tardly villain who acts with most master
fully malicious malevolence*
The occasion? A production of one of
the oldest and most famous of melodramas,
”The Drunkard”, or The Fallen Saved, This
is the stirring story of Edward Middleton
(Jack Neil), a young red blooded American
who (alasi) has a weakness for strong
drink; his wife Mary (Greta Dear), who
is pure of heart as a newborn babe '
(sighi); their innocent da'ughter J\jlia
(Pauline Melvin); ond of how their hap
py homelife is wrecked by the black
hearted Lawyer Cribbs (Nick Hodsdon.)
The day is saved by Mlly Dowton (Bill
Raoul), the homespun hero and is com
plicated by the idiotic amorous old maid,
Miss Spindle (Skip Williams). Others
in the cast are Beverly Fitzpatrick as
Mary^s mother (who quietly expires in
the second act); Kathy Reynolds as Billy
Dowton*s half witted sister (who went
crazy when Cribbs ruined her lover)^ and
Judy Oudshoff as Miss Rencelow, a noble
philanthropi st*
"The Drunkard” was first presented
in 1844 a temperance movement drama
at P.T* Barman^ s American Museum at Bos
ton, Mass#, and has been drawing full-
house crowds ever since. Neither the
drama nor the moral explains the success
of the audience^s participation in the
performance* Everyone boo^-s the villian,
cheers the hero, and sighs at the her
oine.
So — why pay a psychiatrist to
ease your tensions? Come to the High
lands Community Theatre on the 6th^ 7th,
or 8th of July and let off your inhibi
tions to your hearths content*
