THE GALAX NEWS JULY 31»1958 PAGE 7 LUITS EHD SHOPS LfTTLE LUITS EHD ACCUMULATIVE SALE -ON ALL FjERCHANDISE- THE HILLS OF ENCHANMINT The following lines written as a tribute to the little town of Highlands, in the Blue Ridge Moun tains of North Carolina* By - Robert L. Conlon Hills of Enchantment—how great are thy charms, With rustic village tucked beneath thine arms, Caressingly sheltered from maddening pace. That besets so many sons of Adam*s rac^j Breaks the quietude like a mother*s croon, As sunset chimes with a sacred haunting tune Lulls the mountain folk into peaceful sleep, As in each hamlet the dark*ning shadows croep* Looking down, — ^atop those enchanting hills, With silvern lakes of morning mist, that fills And spills into each cove and vale below. Only to break in countless puffs that glow And glisten like cottany balls of down, Refracting the tints of a day new born. Then floating gently off, from out our view. Bearing aloft our dreams to the azure blue* What myst*ries lie in those enchanting hills. Stretched like the sea, with never ending thrills Of wave on wave of p\arples, greens and blues, A white capped cottage with its gentler hues, A mansion boldly perched *atop a cliff Just like some old world castle here adriftj With winding roads a gleaming through the trees. Like silver ribbons fluttering in the breeze* Eye hath not seen the gems that deeply lie Perhaps beneath old Whiteside, -- towering high. With treasiire rare within some cavern deep, While tangled vines and latirel the secret keepi Ear hath not heard the song of mountain stream, Or cataract in lonely glen unseen, Balsam, oak and pine, - solitary and immense.
