Walt Disney picture of the year
Pollyanna vrith an all-star cast that
includes Jane Wyman, Richard Egan, Donald
Crisp and others, will be shown at the
Galax Theatre Tuesday, August 23rd, as a
benefit performance for the Highlands Com
munity Hospital.
A print of the picture has been do
nated by the Walt Disney Corporation,
through Buena Vista Pictures, their dis
tributors, and was secured through the
efforts of Mrs. Lillian C. Claughton, own
er of the Claughton Theaters in Miami,
Florida# Mrs. Claughton has been a summer
visitor to the Highlands area for the past
three summers.
The Galax Theatre is being donated
for the occasion by Otto F. Summer, owner,
of Highlands. The committee who will han
dle ticket sales has not yet been appoint-

HOSPITAL FUND DRIVE
The I960 Hospital Fund Drive began
officially Monday, July 11, with.a gen
erous donation of a one thousand dollar
check. Hopes are high for like contri
butions during the Drive.
Mr. William H. Melvin of Highlands
and Palm Beach, Florida, is Chairman of
the Drive this summer, and Mrs. Belle
Burke of Highlands and Detroit, Michigan
is donating her time and talents as se
cretary to the Drive,
The improvements and additions to
the hospital, one being the new ramp, are
evidence that the money raised by the
Fund Drive last summer was spent to good
advantage, as is the planting around the
building that adds to fche appearance of
the grounds. A few more improvements
in the hospital building will qualify it
to become an accredited hospital making

New Educational Building
Work has begun on the new educational
building at the Highlands Baptist Church,
and is being built on the church lot be
tween the back of the parsonage and the
church. The new building will include
^00 feet of floor space.
It will house the Beginner, Primary,
Junior, and Intermediate departments; the
church offices; the pastor*s study; a re
creation and dining area; and a church
kitchen.
Mr. Gene Potts, who is the building
superintendent, and Mr. George Penland,
assistant superintendent, are in charge of
the construction of the building,
GARDEN CLUB TEA TODAY

Thursday, at Lee's Inn at 2:30 p.m.
HIGHLANDS DAY. CAHP
Beginning July 11, a new program of
activities for young people started at the
school gym. Called the Highlands Day Camp,
the program is under the instruction and
supervision of Mr. W. J. “Tommy” Thompson
of Orlando, Florida.
Thompson has been doing Y and Day
Camp work for fifteen years. He and his
wife and four children are occupying the
former Crofton cottage in the Mirror Lake
Section. He teaches in Orlando in the
winter.
