Coffee, 49, was a native of
Clayton, Georgia and was married to Miss
Helen Holt of Highlands in 1942. He
died Friday, August 11, at his home fol
lowing an illness of eight months*
In addj.tion to the widow, he is sur
vived one step-son, Thomas Rucker of
Washington, D* C*| one sister, Mrs. James
Mooney of Gainesville, Ga.j and a nephew,
Richard Totekhen of Ittghlands.
BENEFIT AUCTION SUNDAY
On Sunday, August 20, the Big Bene
fit Auction at the Highlands Art Gallery
will be held and everyone should plan
to attend the affair for the benefit of
the Highlands Community Hospital,
A fine selection of baked goods will
be available as well as an interesting
array of auction items.
Anyone who has any items they would
like to donate for the occasion should

BIOLOGICAL STATION LECTURE
Kodachromes of microscopic crystals
of minerals will serve to illustrate the
lecture of Mrs, Lo'iis Perloff at the
Museum on Thursday evening, August 24,
at 8:00 P, M,
It is only with the use of a micro
scope that many of the daintiest and
most colorful of mineral crystals can be
seen. Preparations of these crystals are
known as MICRQMOUNTS. One of the finest

Jackson County Bank to Merge
With First Union of Asheville
It was announced Friday, August 11,
by the executive vice president, James H.
Glenn, of the First Union National Bank
of Asheville that a joint statement by
Carl McCraw, president of First Union
National Bank of North Carolina and E* P.
Stillwell, president of The Jackson County
Bank of Sylva has confirmed the approval
by the directors of each institution for
the plan to merge the two banks* The plan
is subject to the approval of the Comp
troller of the Currency and the stock
holders of each institution.
This will place the bank among the
