SMIOR HIGH CONFERENCE AT MONTREAT
Mr. Frank Gaylord, Miss Kay !Erow-
bridge and Miss Patty Trowbridge left
Wednesday for Asheville Presbytery*s
annual Senior High Young People's Con
ference at Montreat, N# C. They were
accompanied by .their Pastor, Rev. Dan
McCall, who is serving as one of the
Bible study leaders of the Conference.
Montreat, located approximately 13 miles
east of Asheville, is one of the princi
ple assembly grounds for the Presbyterian
Church in the U* S.
HGH RECEIVES ENDOWMENT
Highlands Community Hospital has
received a $2,750 endowment from The
Duke Endowment, Charlotte, N, C. This
endowment was given for assistance in
the purchase and installation of new
diagnostic X-ray equipment for the hos
pital.
Wins Scholarship
The Macon County Veterans of Foreign
Wars $500 scholarship was awarded to MLss
Jessie Lynn Harbison, 1962 Highlands High
School graduate.
This scholarship is made possible by
the gift of Mr. Henry Cabe in memory of
his sons who were casualities in World
V/ar II, and is given 1:^ the V, F. W, to
a deserving student of Macon Coxmty,
Miss Harbison is now on the staff of
the GALAX NEl-JS as assistant editor to her
sister, Miss Tina Harbison. She expects
to enter college at Western Carolina Col
lege in September.

NEWS mm THE STONE LANTERN
This year, for the first time, the
Stone Lantern is featuring a few pieses
of antique and period furniture. The
shop has one of the best collections of
antique porcelains, lacguer ware, bronzes,
and scrolls. Throughout the shop you
will find lovely articles which bring
the Orient right onto our own Main Street.
The tea garden, planned after the
Japanese stlye, has had few additions
since last summer, but we're sure that
all the visitors will remember the cup
of tea they shared there. The garden
adds a chaining note to the shopi
Miss Keiko Tomotsune will be in the
shop this summer, wearing her native
kimonas. She came to Highlands from
Tokyo, Japan last Septemberi and entered
Western Carolina College as a freshman.
She plans, after completing her education,
to return to Japan to teach.
The Stone Lantern is open from lOa.m*
to 5s30 p.m. and in the evenings imtil
10:30 July 4th through Labor Day.
PERSONALS
Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Monroe of New
Orleans, La., will arrive June 11 to
spend a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson arrived
today from New Orleans, La., to spend sev
eral days.
Mr. and Mrs. Seaton Bailey arrived
Tuesday from Griffin, Ga. They have as
their guests !&■. and Mrs. Gordon Milling,
also of Griffin,
Mr. and Mr, Bullman of Miami, Fla.,
arrived Saturday. Bieir daughter, Mrs.
Robert Tonnes, Mr, Tonnes and child also
came. They will be here for a short visit.
Visiting Mr and Mrs. Lloyd W. Wise
this week were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holmes
of KLack Mountain.
Mr. Elizabeth Valentine spent several
days in Durham, N. C, visiting her daugh
ter, Mr. Helen VJaite. Mrs. Waite gradu
ated Satiarday from Duke University,
Mr and Mrs. Tonmy Scanland of Dunedin,
Fla., arrived Thursday to open their home
for the summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Burke arrived several
days ago to spend the summer.
Visiting Mr, and Mrs. E, L. McRae
are their daughter, Mrs. Urban Schutz, Mr.
Schutz, and Deborah.
