the year 1813, there was a question be

them* A commission from each of the Caro-
linas was appointed by the legislatures
to have 'bhe location of the line determin
ed, and South Carolina also appointed a
commission to determine the line between
it and Georgia, which line was supposed
to follow the Savannah River from the
coast to the 35th parallel of north
latitude*
To carry out this work, the comp*
missions employed an Etoglish engineer
named Ellicott, who started out from Sa^
vannah, following the river and its iQain
tributary to a point, which after several
weeks of observation, he established as
the 35th degree of north latitude* Here
he placed a marker on a rock In the Chatoo*
ga River, which consists of the following:

The point became knows and has since been
called ”KIlicott>s Rock***
E3.1icott*s rock lies secluded in
some of the wildest and most beautiful
country in this section* The' Chatoogs
River, beautiful at any place^ is espe
cially so for several miles above and be
low the rock* This ^int can be reached
over the Horse Cove and Glade roads
automobile and then by foot over the Gl^
Warry trail for four and one-half miles#
When the ford of the river is reached, a
small island will be noted, and the mark
er will be found on the east bank of the
river, about one-third of the distance
of the island from the southern end*
MRS. S. L. NcCARTY PASSES
Word was received here of the death
of Mrs* Elizabeth Louise McCarty, on Wed
nesday, July 18* Mrs. McCarty,mother of
Mr» Sidney McCarty of Highlands, had been
in failing health for some time* She was
in ^opka, Fla at the time of her death,
but had lived with her daughter, Mrs* E3.1-
zabeth Rose, in Orlando, Fla« Sidney Mc
Carty left immediately Wednesday morning
for Florida* Funeral services will be
held in Orlando and graveside rites will
be in Augusta, Ga» where Mrs# McCarty* a
late husband, Rev# S* L# McCarty, was the
