Mr, Pitkin, a graduate of Cornell, has studied gardens in many European countries and was for six years Superintendent of Parks at Rochester, N* Y, before coming to Asheville. Mr, Pitkin introduced his talk on the Design and Planting of Small Gardens l?y saying that gardens were fomerly for show, but are now for enjoyment; a garden is like an outdoor rocia and should be planned to fit in with the owner* s house, way of life, and interests. He pointed out that there are two essentials for a small garden- first, consideration to every detail, and second, garden architecture or design, is more important than the planting. There must be a plan which will provide good de sign, good proportion and easy maintenance, Mr, Pitkin remarked that garden accessoi^es such as a well designed gate, a piece of garden sculpture, or plants in interesting containers, all add to the attraction of the garden; and that originality and dis tinction should be sought for. After this interesting and imformative talk, the members and guests enjojred a so cial hour in a private room where an at tractive tea table was set with a delec table array of sandwiches as colorful to see as they were delicious to eat. The Garden Club*s special thanks go to High Hampton Inn for their graciousness.
