The classic, timelessly engrossing and essentially a woman*s story in every sense of the term, was an outstanding success when filmed with Irene Dunne and John Boles and later with Margaret Sulli van and Charles Bojrer, It has been re«a- dapted to take advantage of modern cinema techniques. New concepts in sound and photography have added immeasurably to the film*s dramatic appeal. Heart-tugs and the original lovin magic of "Back Street" however, remain unchanged. Susan Hayward, at the peak of her fab ulous career, has rarely delivered a more vitally absorbing performance. Seen as the story* s Rae Smith, ambitious young fashion designer who lives in the shadowy background of the married man she loves, the star seem destined to arouse more com ment in this role than any other. For handsome John Gavin, "Back Street" and his co-starring opposite Miss Hayward offer the popular young player even great er opportunities than his portrayals in "Imitation of Life," and the more recent "Tanmy Tell Me True." Deftly directed by David Miller from a screenplay by Eleanor Griffin and Wil liam Ludwig, heart-throb action in sequence after sequence reaches Its torrential cli max when Susan and her lover’s two child- 'ren find the answer to a human puzzle that only tragedy could solve. iiS-L "SINCE 1881" Meals Served By Reservation CflBin UJEflVERS 2 MI % off highway 64 between HIGHLANDS d CASHIERS Homemade Gifts - Pottery HANDWOVEN LINENS, SKIRTS Rocks and Minerals HANDCARVING. * * driftwood
