Rev* and Mrs* G* Dan MoCallf "THUNDER IN CAROLINA" The story, with a stock car racing background, has an extra quota of thrills and spils sprinkled throughout. Complete ly filmed on location in the Darlington, S, C, area, the color camera has captured some beautiful and pictorially striking background in addition to the action of the story. This is the location of the famous "Southern 500," the stock car racing clas sic that, is run each Labor Day before a crowd of over 100,000 people. For the ll^rst time, scenes were shot in the racing cara, and this has the effect of literally transporting the audience right into the middle of the big race. Another interesting sequence is film ed in the North Carolina mountains where Rory Calhoun has taken John Gentry to teach him race driving on the winding roads. In the process, they get chased hy revenuers who mistakenly think they are "moonshine" ranners. The performances are excellent through out. Rory Calhoun plays the part of Mitch Cooper, ex-moonshine runner and veteran race driver who has lately been dogged by a string of bad luck. Alan Hale, son of the greatly loved character actor, Alan Hale, Sr., is cer tainly a chip off the old block, both in looks and action. He does a great job as Buddy Schaeffer, a racing mechanic who has a lust for living. Connie Hines has appeared in many top hour-long TV shows, but this is her first feature film. As Rene York, the young wife, she is very attractive and appealing. John Gentry gives a capable perfor mance as Les York, a young man who operates a repair garage, but wants to be a race driver. Helen Downey is very convincing in her role as Eve Mason, who is looking for a man——any man. "Thunder in Carolina" opens at the GALAX THEATRE on Wednesday, August 22.
