THE GALAX NEWS JUNE 27^ 1963 PAGE Ik (GAIAX NEWS CON’D FROM PAGE l) 1958, a writer for the Asheville Citizen, Mrs. Lillian Hirt, interviewed Mary, who is now secretary to Dr. Killian of the Guidance Clinic at Western Carolina College, and her story appeared in that paper, as well as in the Franklin Presso The article stated that while Mary was still a high school student, she recognized the need for local publication and felt she could put together a paper that would help the summer residents and tourists get ac quainted with the Highlands area, and also to introduce them to the permanant resi dents, Thus, the GALAX NEWS was born. In that year, the first issue consis ted of only 7 pages, and the work was done solely by Mary. Later, however, as the publication and circulation increased, Mary sought helpers. Various ones who had as sisted her since that time included Judy Reynolds, Jo Ann Dendy, Lois Potts Keener, and Ella Cabe, My sister Jessie Harbison, began work with me in my fifth year. From 7 pages to 25 and 26, the GALAX NEWS has e^qjanded to meet the needs and to cover the news and events of the area, and almost every year, a new piece of equipment has been installed at the office, or a better type of material has replaced an old one* Yes, it seems a long time since I be gan work here, I have seen the GALAX NEWS grow each year, I have seen people grow attached to it, as I have myself in an un explained sort of way, I guess when you work with so many really nice people in a nice town, when you try to bring them news, items of interest, and entertainment, you do become attached, not only to your work, but to all those people, as well. So, in closing, I hope each of you enjoy the GA LAX NiiiWS this season, and we will make every effort to -oresent the best we can to you, our readers.
