HIGHLANDS BIOLOGICAL STATION SCHEDULED, JUNE 30th The thirty-sixth annual meeting of the Highlands Biological Station will be held June 30 in the riuseum of Natural His tory Building, President Leland Shanor vdll convene the Board of Trustees at 3:00 p#m# The annual reports of the Executive Director, the Treasurer and the chairman of standing committees will be heard. Other important matters will be the adoption of the 1963- 64. operational budget, consideration of major repairs and extensions to buildings, and election of officers* The annual meeting of the membership will take place at 400 p.m® at which time President Shanor will deliver his annual report to the membership* Members will elect one trustee in the Class of 1962- 66 to replace Dto Royal Shanics, University of Tennessee, who dies August 1962, and eight trustees for the Class of 1963-67, and a Clerk of the Corporation, Highlighting the meeting of the mem bership v/ill be the presentation of a Ci tation of Merit for meritorious service to the corporation to W, Frank Forsyth, Mur phy, North Carolina, distinguished public servant, Following the meeting of the member ship, the Executive Director will enter tain the trustees and special guests in vited for the ceremonies honoring Senator Forsyth at a buffet supper. James Crawford of Highlands, will enter her jiinior year at l^iars Hill next fall* Miss Wanda Hopper, da.ughter of lir* and I4rs* Fred Hopper, was named on the Dean’s List at Young Harris College, where she is a sophomore, TO ATWD WOODivIAN CONVEi'TTION DT MIAMI Mr. and Mrs* Norman Reeae of High-*- lands plan to attend the Woodmen of the e World Nat*l Convention which will be held July I4.-I8 at Palm Beach, Florida. In May of this year, l‘'ir* Reese was elected National Delegate of the Woodmen for the State of Georgia, and vdll represent Georgia at the National Convention* McGahpbell Displays 231 Carat Emerald A collection of fifteen beautiful North Carolina emerald crystals, the largest one weighing 231 carats, is on display at the Gem Shop on Main Street, The gorgeous collection of crystals was found recently by R, E, Benfield at the famous Hiddenite Mines in Alexander Coun ty. It is the largest one found since the nine ounce gem found there in 1SS2, which was displayed in the Smithsonian Institute, When six emerald crystals were dis covered near Hiddenite, they were locally called "green bolts". From I8BI, when the Emerald & Hiddenite Mining Company was organized, these “green bolt" have been found at intervals. They have been found ranging from 8^ inches, as the above mentioned one, to 2 to $ inches, all being of good coloration. After 1885 and until 1926, the mine remained inactive, but, as indicative of Benfield’s collection of crystals, the mine still yields fine em erald. 0 E S MEETINGS Stated meetings of the Highlands Order of the Eastern Star are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at eight o’clock in the Masonic Hall, The Worthy Matron is Mrs, Irene James and the Secretary is Mrs* William Slattery.
