DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE STONE GAR--
DEN OF KYOTO?
The Japanese for more than 2000 years
have had a religion, or philosophy of life,
which was once called Kamino-Michi, but is
better known as Shinto. Shinto is actually
a Chinese word. It means The Way of Good
Spirits, and has to do with ancestor wor
ship, but it also sets forth many rules of
ethics which could well be rules of conduct
by followers of any religion.
Some of the philosophy of Shinto is
much like Confucianism, and some of the

DON HUNGER DIES
Don Eugene Monger, 30» of the Short-
off Community, died Friday at his home
after a long illness.
He was a graduate of Highlands High
School and a member of Highlands Baptist
Church.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mary
Leola Dills Hunger, whom he married in
1957; the parents, William J. and Lona
Crane Hunger; four brothers, Fred, Andy,
and John Hunger of Highlands, and James
Hunger of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and two
sisters, Mrs* Joyce Owens of Highlands
and Mrs. J. C. Holly of Madiera Beach,
Florida,
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday
at Highlands Baptist Church. The Rev,
Earl Dendy and the Rev, Clinton Bailey
officiated and burial was in Highlands
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dusty Rhodes,
James Potts, Pratt McClure, Howard Talley,
Woodrow Holland, and Neville Wilson.
The body remained at the residence,
and was placed in the church by Bryant
Funeral Home thirty minutes prior to the
service.
ANNUAL MEETINGS AT HIGHLANDS
BIOLOGICAL STATION SCHEDULED
The annual meetings of the Highlands
Biological Station, scheduled for this
week end, will bring many distinguished
persons to the area.
The executive committee and the re
search committee will meet jointly on
Saturday evening at eight o*clock in the
Reinke Library. Expected for this meet
ing are Dr. J. W. Hardin, president; Dr.
J. T. Darlington, secretary; Caroline
Hall, treasiirer; Dr* Thelma Howell, ex
ecutive director; Mrs* F. M* Bird; Dr. E.
E. Byrd; Mr. 0. W. McConnell; Dr. H. J.
Costing, chairman of the research commit
tee; Drs, L* E* Anderson, J* R« Bailey,
Charles E. Janner, and Elsie Quarterman.
Special guests at this meeting are
the following members of a National Science
Foundation panel: Drs. Robert Coon and J,
T, Spencer of the Foundation; Dr. Carl D.
Riggs, director of the University of Okla
homa Biological Station, and Dr, Arthur
Cronquist of the New York Botanical Gar
den. The visit of the panel is a site
visit to review the Station* s request to
the National Science Foundation for addi
