Others in "The Cardinal" include Romy Schneider, Carol Lynley, Jill Haworth, Burgess Meredith, Ossie Davis, and Bobby Morse• "The Cardinal" traces the rise of a young American Catholic priest to the em inence of Prince of the Church, in the per iod between the two World Wars. Starting with his ordination as a priest, in 191?f "The Cardinal" follows Tryon*s personal life and his career in the Church, with ab sorbing and sympathetic attention. It shows his defeats, his disappointments, his triumphs. It traces his spiritual struggles with himself, his doubts of his qualifications for the self-sacrificing vo cation he has chosen, his final realization that devotion to his religion is a stronger emotion in himself than even love. These personal conflicts are set a- gainst a moving background of intense dra matic experiences. There is the young priest*s need for wisdom when his own sis ter falls in love and wants to marry a boy of Jewish faith. There is the time when, out of his priestly raiments, he is fas cinated by lovely Viennese actress Romy Schneider; his decision to resume his priestly garb marks a turning point in their lives. There is the effort of the priest to discover the religious prejudices.
