MEMORIES FROM THE HILLS
BY LAWRENCE WOOD
With interest in the July 19 opening
of Macon County*g newest mountaintop at
traction, Gold Ifeuntain, our minds wander
back to the days when the Indians owned
all of this great country of our*s« Her
nando de Soto entered the Cherokee country
here over four hundred years ago in search
of gold* It is said that he passed througji
what is now the Town of Highlands. If so,
he was the first tourist to come to this
lovely place. I feel sure he never thought
of a town ever being here or in any other
section of this country*
Erczn time to time others came here to
trade with the Cherokees, but many years
passed before the first (CON*D, PAGE 10)
