Norma T« Pierson
One of the most remarkable and talent-
ed artists who will exhibit in the Nanta-
hala Fine Arts Show this week is l^r, Fran
cis G« Baldwin# He is the brother of Mrs.
Carlos Bean of Kilgore, Texas^ who owns a
summer home on the Dillard Hoad,
Mp* Baldwin was bom in Cincinnati,
Ohio, and attended Cincinnati Art School
and M* I* T* He has also studied at the
Chase School of Art, Sarasota, Florida,
His business was the manufacture a^id in
stallation of flooring and he is now re
tired.
"THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE"
It is recorded that when the officer
of the guard asked the dying Marcus Aur
elius for the watchword of the day, he
replied: "Go to the rising sun; my sun
is settini" Aurelius, Emperor of the
mighty Roman Empire, was not only a phil
osopher, but a prophet as well; for, al
though Rome was then at the height of
its glory, its sun was setting too,
Marcus Aurelius was a great states
man, and a ruler of profound wisdom;
nevertheless for all his brilliance, he
contributed to the death of the Roman
Empire, For all of his virtues, his wis
dom, moral fortitude, he had one weak-

Mr, Baldwin started painting on his
TOth birthday, A few years back, he paint
ed the picture of the Highlands Inn Build
ing which hangs in the lobby and which is
reproduced on the Inn*s postcards. At pres
ent, he designs and hooks rugs. He wiU
enter a watercolor design which has been
copyrighted in the show,

magnificent recreation by Samuel Bronston
which does more than capture the sweep
and splendor of Rome in its last epoch of
glory. It points a moral to every na

sent, but those to come. The remarkable
cast of performers includes Sir Alec
Guinness, Sophia Loren, James Mason and
Stephen Boyd, who give the feel and sweep
when the Roman Forum was the meeting
place to decide the fate of Rome. It
