YELLOW MOUNTAIN BECKONS HIKERS
Located on the Macon-Jackson County
line, Yellow 14ountain is about six miles
airline north of Highlands. It is the
highest mountain in the Highlands ereai
5127 feet, and is the site of a U. S.
Forest Service lookout tower*
Accessible only by foot travel—or
occasionally by jeep to those who care to
live dangerously—Yellow Mountain is both
challenge and reward for hikers. During
late July and August the mountaintop is
covered by blueberries and an abundance of
colorful wildflowers^ providing both food
and beauty for its visitors. The Turk's
cap Lily and Yellow Fringed Orchid grow in
profusion on the rocky crest during early
August. A panoramic view includes the
Blue Ridge Parkway, the town of Franklin,
Glenville Lake, Satulah and Whiteside
Mountains.
Although trails approach Yellow
Mountain from all sides, the most popular
trail, constructed and maintained by the
U# S. Forest, leads across Shortoff Mount
ain. This trail has two beginnings—four
miles east of Highlands on U. S. Highway
6^, marked by a Forest Service sign, and
Cole Mountain Gap on the Buck Creek Road.
Leaving from U. S. 64, one travels
a short distance on a Forest Service ac
cess road which dead ends at the trail's

beginning. The trail then climbs to the
Cowee Mountain Ridge and follows the
Macon-Jackson County line through Short-
off Gap and around the east side of
Shortoff Mountain. On the northeast
ridgepoint of Shortoff Mountain this
trail intersects the trail which begins
at Cole Mountain Gap and leads directly
across the top of Shortoff Mountain.
Leaving the intersection one drops into
another gap and then ascends Goat Knob,
which lies between Shortoff and Yellow
Mountains. The trail drops from Goat
Knob into Yellow Mountain Gap and begins
the steady ascension of Yellow Mountain.
Each trail is about five miles one way
and requires about foiu* hours leisure
hiking time, or eight hours for the
round trip.
Bob Padgett, Highland District
Ranger, advises hikers to travel light
and to carry drinking water. Since the
trail travels the ridgetops, springs are
not present during the summer months.
Additional information may be found at
the Forest Service Ranger Station.
