C, Phone 451-3725 GOMHUNITY DEVELOPMENT PICNIC The Shortoff Conrniunity Development Or ganization held their annual picnic Sun day, July 3rd, at Cold Springs Bridal Farm with approximately attending. After the picnic, Ed Talley, presi dent, gave a report on what the organiza tion has done or has as a project for the coming year. Mr. Talley urged everyone in the Shortoff Community including Flat I^Duntain, and 1/Jhiteside areas, to attend the meetings, which are held the first Wednesday night of each month at the Shortoff Baptist Church. BOB RICE RESIGNS Bob Rice, Forestry Technician for the Highland Ranger District of the Nantahala National Forest, has resigned his position effective July 2nd. Bob plans to pursue a new career of private contracting in the construction of orads, bridges, lakes, buildings and other improvements and in land locations and development. During his fourteen years of Pbrest Service employment. Bob has participated in-many, projects -cui-tJae..Highland distr-ict. He has led many crews in the suppression -of destructive wildfires; he has select ed and marked for sale many millions of board feet of national forest timber; he has established hundreds of acres of new forests, cut many miles of hiking trails across the mountains, located and supervised construction of many more miles of forest roads including the Blue Valley Road and Wilson Gap Road; he has played a large part in providing and maintaining recreation area improvements at Cliffside and Vanhook Glade. District Ranger Bob Padgett has this to say about Bob and his new career, "The Forest Service will greatly miss Bob in many ways. But we hope to make continued use of Bob in his new role of private contractor. And we know we can count on Bob to come foirward with his extensive fire experience when the forest is dry and the winds are high. We wish him the best of luck in his new venture".
