A visitor out for an evening walk last
Friday, July 15, may have heard echos of
•’remember when”, ”what happened to ruff , (Gladys Burnette), Alfred Station,
or ’’you haven’t changed a bit” coming from
the direction of the Highlander Restaurant,
The occasion for this hubbub of voices
was a reunion meeting of the members of
the Highlands High School class of 1941*

Above is the so-called Spanish in
scription atop Devils Courthouse adjacent
to I'ifhiteside Mountain, both in Jackson
County, North Carolina, although close
to the Jfecon County line. The writer
had long been suspicious about this in
scription, its perfection and the like,
the answer to which might have been lost
before long had he not located two per
sons who knew its maker and these no
longer 3roung. The inscription was open
to question because of poor Spanish, er
rors in grammar and spelling in that
language, the lack of a date, and any
sense in meaning. Rirthermore, no men
tion of it was ever made by the many ear

Vandals who removed trail information
signs at Glenn Falls Scenic Area caused
11-year old Susan Clearman to be lost on
June 22 for about one-half hour. Susan’s
