The fresh and rejeuvenating mountain climate, the exquisitely scenic countryside, and the charm and restfulness of a small town all attract people from many places throughout the country. Perhaps the most rewarding experience one can have in High lands, however, is to live among some o'f the most gracious and friendly people ever assembled into one comirpnity. We know of a young man, for example, who came to Highlands recently to live and work for the summer* Listening to his remarks a- bout his e:jq3eriences (his work involves meeting many people, both permanent and summer Highlanders) you might suspect that he had previously begun to lose faith in the human race, and that coming here gave him the most pleasant surprise as to the kindness and generosity of people. Especially those of Highlands. Of all praise that our community deserves, this young man has given the highest. Say, if you ever get the urge to hop into the family bus and go sightseeing, why not spin down to Scaly Mountain Com munity to drive through the Flats? This bottomland, farmed in the tradition of the Old South, has that old sentimental appeal rivaling that of the old romantic landscape paintings. Out of the woods have been carved tidy little plots which are now in many lush hues of green. The Industrial Revolution has reached the Flats, although you will probably see the plowing and harrowing done with the fabled "GeeI” and "Hawl". If you want to browse through this sleepy countryside, drive out the Dillard Road until you get to Scaly Mountain, and turn left at Head's Superette (and stop for a Nehi) • JV-ora there, follow the road south (it's paved) through an area that does the picture post cards one better. If you have any children, chances are that they enjoy, or would enjoy, go ing swimming at any of the numerous lakes, streams or waterfalls in the Highlands area. Especially favored by kids are the ’felides", which are very slippery, over which the slide enthusiast ( and a sheet of fast moving water) zooms to a very chilly splashdown in the pothole at the bottom of the slide. Wherever your chil dren swim, however, there are likely to be hazards to their safety. Jagged rocks, dangerous currents and hidden drop-offs are all threats to the safety of the smaller tykes who are not really strong swimmers. This does not imply that our swimming places are inherently more dangerous than Florida's beaches or your hometown municipal swimming pool, but rather that when children are in the water, strict adult supervision is a must,..always. The Highlands Biological Station Softball Team welcomes any team opposi tion. The field, though knee-deep in weeds tox-zards the out field, remains in good condition for (COM'T ON PAGE 21)
