There are many people, whom we all
know, who agree that the Bible served a
useful purpose in the past but now seem
to be of the opinion that this is a day
when something else can take its place.
Others may thin k that it is some
thing to keep near-by as a symbol of
faith but knowing what is in it may be
another thing. One story relates of the
experience that a minister had when he
was making a visit in the home of one of
the families of his church. lAlhen the
minister arrived for a pastoral call, the
mother sent her little girl to the door
with instructions to talk with the mini
ster a few minutes until she finished a
telephone call. The family Bible was
on a table near the minister's chair,
so he asked the little girl if she knew
what was in it. She replied that she
certainly did, in fact, she knew all
that was in itl Such a statement was
rather unesual, so the clergyman asked
her to tell him something of her know
ledge of the contents. The reply was,
"liTell, there is sister's boy friend's
picture, a lock of baby brother's hair,
mama's favorite recipe, and daddy's
pawn ticket for his watch".
The Bible should be more than a
fetish that demands_^_tradi.tlcmaJ_T^jgpji.^^
ence. The Bible is to be read and lived
by as a basis for our lives. It is a
type of constitution that is accepted by
the Christian as God's Word, and thereby,
to be helpful, it should be known. Amer
icans should not have much difficulty un
derstanding the meaning of a constitution,
since, in the United States, we have a
constitutional government. The constit
ution of our conntry gives us knowledge
of our rights and privileges as citizens.
It tells of responsibilities of leaders
as well as the honor that should be shown
them. Americans should accept it and
although we do not worhip it, we respect
it and should know its meaning. The Bible
is a divine constitution and therefore
should be used as such.
If you would receive help, and in
turn be helpful, as you use the Bible,
you should first ask God to give you the
faith to accept it as God's word. Until
you do so, you will not have the desire
to study it nor will you be willing to
obey it because sometimes it seems expen
sive to do so. Actually the most expen
sive thing in the world is to not believe
and live by it, but this is not seen al
ways.
Once you have accepted the Bible as
Gocfe Word, you will find a need for pray
er along with your daily study. In pray
er we talk to God and through the Bible
