Just between arithmetic and read ing I happened to glance out my door and there, in perhaps eight inches of snow, stood the adorable little pup—shivering, whin ing, ears drooped, tail wagging, and eyes eagerly seeking someone to let him in. "The kiddies can be left alone for just a minute," I thought. % first mis take! "Maybe if I gave him just one pat he will be on his way." second mis take. The third mistake. . .yes, the next thing I knew he was wiggling around in HQT arms, gleefully licking my face. By this time it was too late. At least ten of the kiddies—enough to ap propriately disrupt a classroom—spotted what was going on* Excited shouts of "Oh, isn*t he cute!" "I want to pet him! "I wonder if he*s hungry!"—along with "Can we keep him?" spilled out of the room and echoed into the hall. In order to salvage what might be left of classroom order, I calmly (?) commsinded one little elfin to close the door. "Kiddies, I have an announcement to make." Gales of laughter sounded forth (maybe I did look a little stupid with that pup interrupting every other word). If you promise not to utter an other sound we can keep little Blackie here in the room until lunch time* He can just wander around and do what he wants. But the first one of you who says a word—out he goes!" A few chins wobbled, but I proceeded, "And you wouldn't want him to be pushed back out into the cold, would you?" I asked, shaking my head. "Okay, back to work— you too, Tim!" Much to i^y surprise the kiddles did get back to work, and, I might add, were extremely quiet. The pup wandered a- round until he found a suitable bed be tween two loving feet—only after chew ing one pencil, tugging at two skirt tails, slobbering on several books, and scratching four fleas (I suppose they were fleas). Ihe story could have ended here: the little black pup snoring sweetly; the kiddies working diligently, with on ly an occasional glance in the pup*s direction; and the teacher vowing never to allow the heart to rule the head in puppy matters. Once in a while when someone did feel the convulsion to say something, he was pounced upon by twen- ty-six classmates chiming in unison, "Shhh—or she'll throw him out!" About twice I heard whispers of, "shhh—you'll wake him up!" This peaceful state of affairs lasted, much to (CON'D, PAGE 15) PEOPLE’S DEPT.
