NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY
ENACTS UNIVERSITIES BILL
The North Carolina General Assembly
has enacted legislation establishing a
regional system of universities from the
mountains to the coast*
1^0 of the four state supported sen
ior colleges forming the initial frame
work of the new university system are lo
cated in the Western North Carolina moun
tains.
They are Western Carolina College at
Cullowhee and Appalachian State Teachers
College at Boone
The other two—one in the Piedmont
and the other in the east—are A & T Col
lege at Greensboro and East Carolina Col
lege at Greenville.
The legislation elevating the four
colleges to university status went into
effect July 2nd.
The regional system move was initia
ted by supporters of university status
for East Carolina College whose first ef
fort earlier in the session met defeat in
the Senate.
Shortly after the regional universi
ties bill was introduced as a new ap
proach by backers, amendments were ac
cepted to include Western Carolina Col
lege and Appalachian State Teachers Col
lege.
