Our Lord knew that Caesar had a role to play in the world and that citizens owed loyalty and support to the empire. St. Paul wrote, "... I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be offered for all men; for sovereigns and all in high office, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in full observance of religion and high standards of morality." (I Tim. 2;l-2, N.E.B.) It must be remeinbered, however, that Caesar is not always content to be limit ed to his role. The governments of the world are not always willing to settle for loyalty and support, but seek, rather, to sain man*s total coinraitiMn^* Christians have a difficult voca tion, therefore, in relation to the state. ¥e ought to be patriotic, loving our homeland T^ith generosity and conviction, we ought not, though, to fall into the trap of saying, country, right or Dilhen oiir country is i-jrong, it is the Christian»s job to try to change things because he loves the land so much that he will not settle for anything less than the best. His duty to God re quires that he do his duty to his coun try by rejecting a thoughtless and total commitment to it. Other Christians in other countries have similar obligations. Our love for America, our concern for its welfare, ought not to obscure the fact that a FVenchmen*s love and concern for France is right and proper, even though this may lead to conflict with our plans and policies. As we remember the total claim God has upon us and attempt to respond to that claim, the other legitimate de mands upon us may be properly ordered. The Christian partiot is one who h?»s discerned that order, (CON»D, PAGE 20) cr. St CHOICE CUBE STEAK . . • . ir. S* CHOICE CHUCK ROAST « • • ARMOUR STAR, FRANKS(12 OZ. PACk) IfRS.
