S. LARGEST Western Carolina University has been authorized by the U. S. Office of Educa tion to conduct the largest National Teacher Corps program in the nation under terms of the 196? law signed Thursday by President Johnson# The law authorized $135 million to extend life of the program for three more years. Western Carolina was the only North Carolina institution in 1966-6? to con duct a Teacher Corps program, and drew national acclaim for the success of the venture. Dr, Ray B, Sizemore, associate pro fessor of education at WCU, is director of the program, conducted under the De partment of Education and Psychology headed by Dr. C, D. Killian# Dr# Sizemore said the program at WCU, starting July 17, will include au thorization for h2 "interns" and 10 train ing supervisors, or "master" teachers. During the past school year, 26 interns were engaged at WCU in the program# Dr# Sizemore said the U# S# Office informed him the authorization for WCU would provide for the largest number of participants at any of the colleges or universities participating in the new pro gram this summer and fall# The National Teacher Corps project at WCU last year sent intern teachers in to a number of (CON*T ON PAGE SIXTEEN) Klim^S INN CHANGES HANDS !&*, and Mrs. John Fhelan of Pb. Laud erdale, Fla. last week purchased King*s Inn. The annoimcement was made by KErs# Betty Trowbridge, recent manager of the inn. King*s Inn has been owned by the King family since 1925 when the late Robert R# King bought it# ]y&7. Fhelan and his wife Gary have owned a home in Horse Cove since 1959, and have been in the hote1-restaurant business since 1937* ]%•# Fhelan stated that he plans to make many changes which will include re furbishing, redecorating, and property improvement# "By next summer", I^r# Fhelan said, '*we hope to have an addi tional 35 to ho rooms# We also will in corporate some kind of entertainment or private club". The Phelans hope to keep the inn open much later in the year, until mid- December 5 or, if weather permits, open ing on weekends throughout the winter# In charge of the food operation along with Mr# and Mrs. Phelan will be H. W# (Smitty) Smith, of Boca Raton# Mr# .Smith has owned several restaurants in Ft# Lauderdale and Boca Raton, and is well known throughout south Florida# He and his wife Maxine have been summer residents here for about 20 years# The sale of King*s Inn was handled by Mr# Clyde M3hder of John H* C# Perry Agency, Inc#
