stone Lanterns from early times have
been used by the Japanese as best fitted
and consistent with love of elegance and
faithfulness to nature for the practical
purpose of lighting a garden, boat-landing,
or a path over the hillside* The names of
stone lanterns have their derivatives from
various temples and shrines* However, as
time advanced, the idea of decoration en
croached upon that of utility and many sizes
and designs evolved depending upon interior
and exterior usage*
