I loved that bird. The rambling porch, extending the entire length of the house, was an ideal place for the cage to hang - free from the rain, but with just enough sun shine to make an inviting atmosphere. But - the cage was empty. Away I ran to check on my rabbit gum. Every boy had a rabbit gum* Caught some too. Finding the trigger tripped and hastening to view my catch, I turned the trap on end to keep my prize from escaping when I opened the door. There it was - no rabbit - but a young mocking bird that had evidently taken shelter from an afternoon shower. Yes, I had a cage.
