"AFRiaW SAFARI" ”/ifrican Safari” is a true story, filmed completely in Central Africa by an imal collector Ron Shanin. It folloirs him through a series of exciting adventures, the most hair-raising of which is the hunt for a lion that has killed some dogs in a Bushman village. The lion charges Shanin at close range and his first two shots miss. The camera clearly records the lion pouncing squarely on Shanin*s head just as the fatal shot is fired. And it*s reall Further excitement comes in the form of Shanin capturing, barehanded, two of the deadliest snakes in Africa. There is the whole fascinating array of African wild life - animals and birds including lions, leopards, elephants, ga zelle, cheetahs, some engaging footage of a couple of rhinoceroses kissing, zebras, a rare type of eagle with a seven-foot wingspread, and beautiful egrets in flight. Shanin’s camera and sound equipment captured some natives* speech for the first time in any film and in particular the pygmies, the brave little people of Africa. Tlieir Bambutti language, plus that of other tribes, and the animal and bird sounds were recorded right there as it all happened. There is real beauty and drama in the scaling of the mystic Mountains of the ^bon on the Congo Border. But the climax of the film is the spectacular and violent eruption of a volcano on the Congo. Close- ups of flying lava and a veritable river of fire as the lava cascaded down the slopes brings the viewer breathtakingly close, Shanin himself, in photographing these scenes, had his clothes literally burned off and could get close for as little as 30 seconds at a time. Two men lost their lives in the film ing, one a 31-year-old Briton, died of pneumonia. The other, a 21-year-oM African, was accidentally shot during the filming of a lion hunt. The filming took years and covered 2^,000 miles of the African continent. The film plays Friday and Saturday, August 8-9. at the GAIAX THEATRE.
