Regional Jbrester T* A. Schlapfer announced. Timber sales in the 13-state South ern Region for the fiscal year which ended June 30 amounted to 1,022,075,000 board feet. All timber sales in the XSh National Forests of the United States during the fiscal year totaled 18,959, 003,000 board feet, Ihis total, hoiirever was considerably higher than last year's sales figui*e because of a huge pulpwood sale of 8 3/k billion board feet made in Alaska to be harvested over a 50-year period. In fiscal year 1968, the sales total for all National Forests was 11-g billion board feet, Schlapfer said he is particularly pleased with the new record chalked up by the South because it is comparative ly nsi^ as a timber production area. He explained that most National Forests in the Southern Region were created from cut-over lands acquired since the early 1930’s. The Forest Service Regional Office in Atlanta was established in 193U. "This year's record of sales is a result of the intensive forestry pro grams carried out on these lands in the form of reforestation, thinnings, and other cultural work," Schlapfer said. complete prescription service and sick room needs PERRY’S DRUG STORE Franklin, ff)acon Qouivtu Sjjice. 7 88?" He said that 20 years ago National Pbrest sales from the South were on3y about one-third the annual volume re corded in fiscal 1969. "The 1969 sales volume was excep tionally significant,” Schlapfer said, '^because of the current national concern over meeting the future needs of a grox^- ing population for lumber, plyijood, and other wood products. The billion board feet of timber would build at least 100,000 houses,” Schlapfer pointed out that in addition to the record timber sales the National Forests also provided recreation for millions of southerners, hunting and fishing, clean water for cities and industry and, in some places, forage for cattle. we. aA.e/1 ^t ..... ajiuuxiy. ¥e ^ -ve heard many comments on the Blue Ridge Pharmacy ad being upside dorm last week..,.no, it wasn't an error, it was supposed to be like thati However, it's good to know that people are noticing the ads and reading the GAUX NEIfSI FISK BAIT NEAR forest service office WiGGLERS and EiGHT GrAV/LERS/ PHONE 526-264:0 or 526--2206 f Louis So, Edwards FOR SALE Shetland ponies YEARLING AND YOUNGER --ALSO-- 2 SINGLE-FOOTING RIDING HORSES Gall 526-2317 OUTSTANDING 2 - BIG DAYS Aug.
