Distinguished Georgia Botanist
To^Speak
On Tuesday, August 19, at 8:00 p.m.
Mrs, Iferie Ifellinger Td.ll speak at the
I^seum of Natural History. The lecture,
entitled "Non-Flowering Plants of the
Area, will be illustrated with live
specimens. ]yb?s. Mellinger, of Tiger,
Georgia, is a distinguised naturalist,
free-lance author, and photographer.
She is the author of Fun With Nature
and Sie Island Wildlife Reserve (Hilton
HeadX and co-author of Plants of the
Savannah River Refuge, Mrs, Mellinger
is a frequent contributor to the South
Carolina Ifegazine and the Savannah Sun
day News; her most recent article,
’TAJhere Have All the Flowers Gone," ap
peared in Foxfire l^gazine of Rabun Gap,
Georgia. She also writes a column en
titled "Under the North Georgia Oape-
vine." At the present time, Ifrs. MbII-
inger is working on an Atlas of Georgia
Range Records and a biography of Dr.
J. K. Small,

HIGHLANDS SCHOOL OPENS FOR
REGISTRATION SEPTEMBER 2ND
Mr. Stoney G. Hinkle, nei'j princi
pal for the 1969-1970 school term, has
announced that school will open for
student registration on !Riesday, Septem
ber 2nd and will be for a half-day on2y.
The regular school term will begin on
Wednesday, September 3rd. Teachers are
scheduled to begin work on Thursday,
August 28, with their first holdiday
being Monday (labor Day) September 1st.
Ifr. Hinkle graduated from Western
Carolina University in 1961; he also
attended the l&iiversity of North Carolina
After his graduation he worked for two
years for an oil company, Sesmic Explor
ations, Inc., in l/^ty-oming. He returne^^
to I'ifestern Carolina University in 1963-
I96U to earn teacher certification. He
then served in the U. S. Anny for two
years, 6lst Chemical Company, Ft, Bragg,
N. C. 1^. Hinkle is a native of Winston-
