Wilson said the only injuries he could
find on the boy were what appeared to be
slight head concusions.
HOTierer, iS^ss Nicholson apparently-
suffered a harder fall than the boy. Ac
cording to Transylvania County Deput Sherf
iff Edwin OC'jen, who was at the scene when
the body was recovered, one leg suffered
compound fractures* She suffered concus-
ions also, he said.
Rescue workers at the scene theo
rized that the couple felt themselves
being swept over and young itlller leaped
clear of the worst of the crags jutting
out as he fell.
JE.SS Nicholson was wearing Bermuda
shorts and a sijiiraing halter when found.
James Eroim, U, S. Forest Service
District Ranger of ilighlands, said the
river is siirift at its best, and recent
rains had raised the level several inch
es. He said that a person could stand
up in the flow of water at the head of
the falls, but it would be dangerous.
Mlss Nicholson*s body was reportedly
spotted by Dick Jennings of the Cashiers
Valley Rescue Squad, who saw only her arm
out of the water as he looked dotm to
the pool with binoculars from a high rim
above it.
The falls are about tX'jo miles off
U. S. 6ii, and the terrain is as harsh as
any found in the linville Gorge, reputed
the most rugged terrain in the eastern
U. S.
According to Ranger Brown and other
sources, the two traveled to the area
early Sunday afternoon i-rith William
Tench Jackson, 18, s^nd Christine Cogburn
Crisp, 16, both of Arden.

ports, the four had come to "sTrim and
slide" in the river.
At about iiOO p.m., the couples
separated at ’’Drift Jklls”, a swiinming
hole about one-half mile above Rainbow
K!.11s .
The two whose bodies were recovered
changed from hiking clothing to swimming
clothes and said they would go dcfim to
Rainbow Falls.
In the meantime, young Jackson and
Mss Crisp remained where they were.
When the couple failed to return by
7 p.m., the others got alarmed and went
looking for them. Ihey told investiga
tors they made three trips dor^rn the muddy
laurel-vaulted trail toward Rainbow Falls.
The couple then returned to the car
and waited a short time. Then they called
the Rosman Rescue Squad and Transylvania
County Sheriff*s Department. (CQN’T P. 20)
