GOV. SCOTT DEFENDS N. C. GASOLINE TAX
Raleigh - Gov. Bob Scott vigorously
defended North Carolina*s gasoline tax,
which is the highest in the nation,
I^fonday.
Speaking to a Democratic campaign
conference that came as a prelude to
Tuesday*s state Democratic convention,
Scott said that the ranking does not
tell the whole story.
Scott said North Carolina is the
only state that builds and maintains all
its roads solely with state funds and
that the state road system is the largest
in the nation.
In other states, he said, counties
and toimships build and maintain their
roads through property taxes, tolls and
with other tax levies.
Scott said that when the tax monies
used by other states are equalized to

MANEUVERS HURTING NATIONAL FORESTS?

the increasing use of our national forests
for military maneuvers?
Recently, these maneuvers have re
sulted in the burning of about 1,000 acres
of the Croatan National Forest in the
eastern part of the state, and it has
been reported that they have caused
serious ecological and aesthetic damage
