THE GAIAX NEWS AUGUST ^,1971 PAGE 9 PUBLIC INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND POLICIES ON NATIONAL FOREST LANDS Highland District Ranger James Brown announced today that the Forest Service is holding a session for the pub lic August 9, 7:30 P.M. at the Highlands Natural History Miseum. Brown said **That the Forest Service is charged with managing the National Forest Lands for the greatest good, for the greatest number of people in the long run. We need the public *s recommendations and inputs to help the Forest Service identify the best land management practices and policies for the greatest number of people". Brown said that he would briefly explain? 1# Physical impacts on the Highland District. 2. A new planning procedure for the l^tional Forests in the East involving public partici pation. 3- Highland Ranger District*s program of work for the Fiscal year *72. The session TiTill then be opened up to the public for comments, recommendations, or any questions on the public’s mind concerning the administration of the National Forests. Ranger Brown said that this session would be an excellent opportunity for interested citizens to not only learn what*s going on in your National Forests but to actively contribute to improve management of these public lands. MUSEUM ACTIVITIES On Wednesday, August 11 there will be a walk up Chestnut Ridge led by Dr. Ralph Sargent. Chestnut Ridge is one of the few remaining places where Carolina Hemlock and Table Mountain Pine ita|" still be found. This ridge is a part of the National Forest and will always be preserved as a wilderness area. Persons interested in the Chestnut Ridge trip will meet at the Miseum shortly before lOsOO A.M. so that cars may be pooled for the ride out U.S. 6h to the starting point of the walk. The afternoon of August 11 at 3sOO P.M. Dr. Lindsay Olive will conduct a walk through the Botanical Gardens of the Biological Station. This tour should be of special interest to persons interested in learning the identity of flowereing plants, trees and shrubs of the Highlands area. This walk will begin at the Maseum building.
