THE GALAX »JS AUGUST 19, 197-1 PAGE 5 FOREST SERVICE PLANS EXPLAINED FESTIVAL OF GOSPEL SONGS CUfton Wilson, Assistant Ranger here for the past four years, told Ro- tarians and guests about the program of the Forest Service in the Highlands Dis trict for the next few years, ITie lunch eon meeting at Phelps House last Tuesday was attended by some 70 local Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, and guests^ the largest crowd on record except for Ladies Nights. According to Ranger Wilson the aim of the Forest Service is to use its land (6U,6?8 acres in the Highlands District alone) in such a manner as to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the long run. The Service is obligated by law to sell timber each year and to turn over 2^% of the proceeds to the County to be used for schools and roads. He estimated that Ifecon County would receive approximately $100,000 from this source in 1971 thus substantially reducing the amount of property tax each resident must pay to the county. An additional lO^b goes to the Federal Govern ment for use in building hi.gh!^ays. In the Highlands area '^22.0 acres have been designated as "Special Areas” set aside due to their outstanding value as recreation spots-among these are Dry Falls, Glen Falls, T-Jhitewater Falls, and Ellicott*s Reek-which are reserved for outdoor enjojrment by the public, Cont on page 15 i-'fembers of the afternoon congrega tion of the Highlands United Methodist Church T'lill present a program of gospel music in the sanctuary of the Church on Sunday, August 22, from 3 until ^ o*clock The public is extended a cordial iiiVit- ation to this festival of song.
