"The Lion in Winter," which opened
Thursday at Highlands Siuraner Theatre is
a powerful production. The brilliant
James Goldman script is well-served by
director I'^ichael Ilall and his company.
The play is a literate and witty
account of the struggle for power bet
ween King Henry II and his queen, Eleanor
of Aquitaine, and their three greedy
sons. At times it is devastatingly fun
ny. It is also warm and deeply moving.
Designer PVank Bennett supplies
much of the magic with very interesting
multi-level set with the excellent mood
lighting by Jim Painter.
Guest star Robert Juergens, head of

is keen and treacherous and well-deserving
of praise for his portrayal. And
Robert Smith is probably the best
Richard I have seen in summer stock.
His bedroom scene with David Traylor
(Prince Philip) is one of the highlights
of the play, Patricia Nesbit is lovely
as Alais, carrying her role with
competence and serenity.
The play is regal in every sense,
