The i'oveted M<>« Vuluabie
PUytT Award, the first of Us kind
erer to be presented aa athlete
from A C College, was preseottMl
to Harry ‘Lefty” Helmer at the
Wilson Theatre last Thursday
night by Clint Karris, popular pro
gram director and announcer from
the local radio station.
The theatre was packed to the
limit as the football players
marched to the stage to be rec>
ognised for the fine work and
spirit they have shown in the
past football season.
Also on hand for the occasion
were the Men's Chorus and the
Women's Charus, who furnished ;
music and song for the ceremony. >
GuestM Intn>4lui't*<l
Among the guests were Ashley
“Duck" Kuttrell. who has done a
fine job in helping the football '
team along, Jim Kulghum, sports
editor of the Wilson Dally Times,
and Mr. Stallings, the manager of
the local theatre.
Bob Spangler, ACC coach. In
troduced the team to the audi
t nce and recognised each player. ,
Said Spangler: “We know that;
we have made a number of mis-'
takes in the past season, but we
are in our Infancy as far as foot- ‘
ball goes. We are going to try
to iron out these mistakes and
soon we hope to have a winning
team.”
rn^Montatloii Mmle i
The climax of the program {
came when Clint Farris brought
forward the trophy, a beautiful!
grid trophy mounted on a wooden
base, and called forward the man
to whom it was to be presented.
The award was made to Lefty
Helmer. bard driving tailback,
who has played his way into the
hciirts of everyone who knows •
him. The trophy was presented :
to him for the good work and the
spirit be has shown in tbe past
season.
The announcement that Helmer
wan chosen for this award was
met with wild enthusiasm from,
the audience. |
Although the ACC football did'
not wiu a single game^ they did
a good Job of letting tbe other;
team know that they were on the
field. The losses they suffered
were not big ones.
The game most likely to be re
membered for Helmer’s perform
ance is the Campbell game in
which Helmer did a great job of
running, passing, and above all,
punting. In this game he got off
several kicks for eighty or more
yards and did a splendid Job of;
inspiring his teammates. In all-'
round playing ability be was the'
cioct ucserving player to be chos-1
en for this award. * •
To ikM'ome Annual Affair ,
Although this is the first time;
that such an award has been made,;
WOTM announced that the pre- ^
sentatlon will become an annual'
affair. Each year from now on,
the radio station will have a simi
lar presentation for the miost
valuable player on the Atlantic
Christian College football team.

Scorers In Virginia
Games; Upset Lynchburg
After KettinK the basketball
veason off to a bad start the ACC
Hulldogs notched their first win
of the season by defeating the
highly favored Lynchburg quintet
by a score of r,7-4I. Sparked by
the brilliant playing of Jimmy
Daniels, the locals went on to
fcore their flr?t win. Jimmy with
14 points was the high scorere of
the night and so far holds the
high scoring honors for the season
Joe McNamara scored 10 in the
Wake Forest game. Jim Hrown
had 10 for the Hoanoke game, and
Daniels 14 for the Lynchburg
game.
Improving
The Bulldogs are improving
with each game and if the im-
pr()venu*nts continue, the ACC
nuintet will be assured of a goodly
number of wins for the season. So
far Coach Spangler has used his
entire s<iuad in each game. In the
first game, the Hulldogs were de
feated by a stronger and more
experienced team from Wake For
est. but since that time the team
has shown a lot of Improvement.
Jim Hrown with 11 points In
the Lynchburg game was runnerup
for individual scoring honors.
Seven ACC men scored at least 7
points. Brown fouled out late in
the game and probably would
have scored more for the locals
had this not hap^vened. He was the
only man to foul out in this con
test.
Intramural Program
News And Briefs
The Intramural program for the
college Is getting a lot of recog
nition now that tbe tcbedule U
under way and Iti s being met with
a widt* range of enthusiasm from
all points. Coach Scrappy Moorf
announced today that new Jerseys
have been bought for tbe intrs'
mural basketball teams and it is
the hope of tbe directors that they
can really dress the teams up.
So far, 82 men hare signed up
for the badminton tournaments
and progress has been good so far
in getting the games otf tbe ticket.
All matches are expected to be off
the calendar by Christmas and
after the holidays the doubles
matches will ge underway. The
first and second rounds of the
I badminton singles have already
I been completed.
The Atlantic Christian College
Student Ufficial Association has
48 offflclals who are doing active
; duty in many of the surrounding
towns and their docket is full for
the rest of the season. The boys
are going through the paces of
making a good group of referees.
In all th<*y call between fifteen
and twenty names a week, both for
girls* and boys* games. They are
meeting the same requirements as
the Southern Conference Assocla*
tlon and they are rated both by the
college and the games they work
in.
The basketball season in the
Intram'iral department is expect
ed to be one of the best ever to be
held at tbe college. Favored in
the matches are the Hebels with
Oene Driver at the helm and the
Tigers under Stan Hodsdon. Here
is good news for the girls. They
will be allowed to attend the
games which begin at 6:30 and
they will be allowed to stay for
the whole game. We hope that the
boys will attend the games and
support these boys who play hard
and long.
If you have any news that you
think should go on the sports
page, please turn it into Jack
Overman and you are promised
that it will get on this page, if
we have the room. It is hard to
get all the news with so little
cooperation, so with your help w«
are going to make this a good
sports page.

late Harry ‘ I«efty'' Helmer for
winning tbe Most Valuable Player
Award and we can say that It went
to a deserving fellow. He has
played some wonderful football
and we ar«* glad that u went to a
great athlete and a wonderful
fellow
The first home game did not
turn out so well, but that is to
, be ixpect^. A lot of the bojrs
.are new at the game and a go^
number of freshmen are on the
»quad The point that counts is
thst the fellows showed a lot of
• due spirit and sportsmanship In j
the Wake Forest game. Although
we lost, Wfi can be reconciled to \
the fact that we lost to a bigger
college team and that ACC was
not expei'tfd to win that game. ;
If the same spirit is shown In the
rest of the games, then AC Is sure
'i to win a good number of them,
i To Joe McNamara goes a lot of
I cri'dit for the five field goals that
I he made that night. Those long
{snots looked good. Joe. and we
I hope that you can keep up the
j good work. It is pisying like that
, that counts.
More congratulations are in
ordor for the Deacons for winning
the volley ball championship.
From what we saw of the games.
• there was a lot to be done in order
I ta gt*t to the top. There was a
lot of hard playing by all the
' tt^ams and to win the champlon-
’ ship deserves a lot of credit. Al-
I though the intramurals get little
publicity, we want to recognise
' all those who took part In them
and to say that with or without
publicity and recognition, you de-
I serve the credit and a lot of it for ;
the fine spirit and hard playing ’
that is often missing in bigger <
games. |
Kvery thing has its time and
j place. We are referring to the |
glee club which has done a fine '
' Job all the way around. But when
it comes to a sports affair we
think that the program should
*Ktlck strictly to sports. Such was;
the case of the presentation of
the .MVP award. The program was
a long one because several off the
subject songs were sung. These
were very much out of place. As
a result, the actual football pro
gram lasted only fire minutes.
The high school band could no
doubt have been on hand if a
I request had been made, and this
would have made the program
; what it should have been, a
s|>orts program. Let us k<H*p that
In mind the next time we have
! a program of this type.

leaving off those figure-butlding

amusing to bear the questions
asked by the studrnts who have
ni'ver played nor seen a girls’ bas
ketball game. Despite this fact,
a great deal of interest is being
shown by all.
After Christmas, a ping pong
and a basketball tournament are
being planned. Perhaps these will
not be so “peppy " and exciting as
our boys* gsmes. but mark my
word, some people will be greatly
surprised when the time rolls
*round The rules are being
poundi*d into tbe lovely heads
of our females; trslning is stiff;
tbe excitement Is prevalent. Don't
forget the coming events: mark

Kaymond Smith's Deacons,
hsrd fighting volleybsll outfit,
walkvd off with the volleyball
Championship by defeating the
seond place Uebels by scores of
31-14 snd 21-12.
Although the Uebels played a
hard gam«*. the power of the Dea
cons was too much for them.
This win climaxed several weeks
of playing by a number of teams
on the campus and brought to
gether two of the best volleyball
teams on the ACC Court.
Although the Deacons started
the season as underdogs, they
forged out front In the early stages
of the gsme snd lost only one
game the entire season.
Cosch Scrappy Moore awardt«d
medals to the champions tn the
Howard Chape) at the regularly
scheduled chapel period and pre
sented the winners to the stu
