Mr. Harry E. Smith, Presbyterian
Campus Minister at the University
of North Carolina, will be the third
in a series of speakers presented by
the Campus Christian Association
this semester. He will relate the
areas of religion and literature.
Mr. Smith received his B. A. de
gree from the University of Texas
at Austin. He received his B. D.
from the Yale Divinity School and
has completed the residency re
quirements for a Ph. D. at Drew
University. He has served in various
capacities in the Presbyterian
church and has held positions of
leadership in the YMCA. He was
Graduate Secretary of the Yale Uni
versity Christian Association in 1952-
53. From 1954 to 1960, Mr. Smith
served as the Presbyterian Univer
sity Pastor at Chapel Hill. In 1960-61,
he held the position of Assistant Di
rector of Field Work, Drew Tlieologi-
cal Seminary, Madison, New Jersey.
Also in 1961, he was a member of
the Political Commission of the
World Student Christian Federation.
Mr. Smith is a past National Chair
man of the Student YMCA and has
served as a delegate to various Stu
dent Christian meetings in Europe.
He has had articles published in
the following publications: Intercol
legian, MOTIVE, The Studeut World,
The Christian Scholar, Presbyterian
Survey, Encounter, Frontiers, and
A Basis For Study. In 1961, he was
elected a Kent Fellow of the National
Council of Religion in Higher Edu
cation. He became a Drew Fellow
in 1960 and was awarded a Dan-
forth Campus Christian Worker Fel
lowship in 1961.
Mr. Smith will be on campus
Tuesday and Wednesday, April 31
and May 1. He will address the en
tire student body on Tuesday and
will remain on campus for various
other activities. There wOl be a dis
cussion group on campus Tuesday
night.

Spring Recess this year is mark
ed by the coming of Easter Sun
day before the official week of
vacation. The vacation period will
begm on Saturday, April 13, at
1:00 P.M. Classes wall resume on
Monday, April the 22, at a very
early 8:00 A.M. This will be the
last break for the Spring Semes
ter of 1963.

Belanger Elected Co-Op
President For 1963-64
For the first time in the history
of Atlantic Christian College a fore
ign student, Maurice Belanger of Co
lon, Republic of Panama, has been
elected as president of the student
body.
A rising senior, the 20-year-old
former Rotary exchange student is
son of Mr. and Mrs. Marcel Be
langer, Gorgas Dr., Colon, Pana
ma. An accounting major, he is a
member of the Golden Knot Honor
Society, Sigma Pi Alpha language
fraternity, Circle K, the Pine Knot
yearbook staff and Sigma Phi Epsi
lon social fraternity.
Belanger will graduate from At
lantic Christian in the spring of 1964.
The president-elect stated, “1
thank these who have supported me
in my campaign and have expressed
their confidence in me; expecially
the able assistance rendered by
my campaign managers, Rexford L.
Horne and Jesse L. Maghan.”

of this year’s voting procedure, for

Sullivan Receives
Outstanding Award
Charles Eric Sullivan, a senior ac
counting major at ACC, received the
“Most Outstanding Business Major
Award” made by the Wilson Cham
ber of Commerce.
The annual award was presented
on April 13 at the Education De
velopment Dinner sponsored jointly
by the Wilson Chamber of Com
merce and Atlantic Christian College.
The dinner was held in Burt Hardy
dining hall.
Sullivan, a resident of Wilson,
throughout his college career, has
worked with the Wilson Tobacco
Company during the tobacco season
and taken a fall academic load dur
ing the spring term and the first
session of summer school. While at
tending ACC, Sullivan has maintain
ed a high “B” average.
The award is made annually to
the most outstanding business major
at Atlantic Christian College who
has an outstanding academic rec
ord, the moral qualities, dependabil
ity and stability and other general
traits which is believed will lead
him to be an outstanding citizen.
The turnout of students on elec
tion day was below last years 75
per cent. Maurcie polled 57 per cent
of the votes cast with Fred Asycue
polling 34 per cent and Tom Pip
pin 9 per cent.
Exec Board Votes
To Require Debate
The Executive Board, during its
weekly meeting Monday night, heard
a report on the grade posting issue,
debated a suggestion for a revival of
May Day, and approved a motion
requiring Cooperative Association
presidential candidates to debate
their platforms in an assembly.
Bob Stone reported that he had
met with a faculty committee to dis
cuss the continuation of the policy
of posting exam scores. He said that
there was a possibility of allowing
students to turn in a self-addressed
post card to their teachers and have
the scores sent to them. This, how
ever, would have to be approved by
the entire faculty. Mr. Stone stress
ed the fact that the matter is es
sentially a faculty one, and that
1 students can only request a reversal
I of policy, not demand one. Dean
; Warren pointed out that individual
i professors could still tell a student
his grade if they so desired.
John Cox suggested that May Day,
discontinued several years ago, be
revived. He said that it could be
brought up to date to appeal to
to present-day students by various
means, and that a letter could be
sent to the North State Student Gov
ernment Association requesting in
formation and advice. The board
voted to set aside $25.00 for use of
a May Day Committee to be selected
from next year’s board.
Rex Horne introduced a motion
that in the future candidates for
president of the Cooperative Associa
tion be required to present their
platforms and to debate one anoth
er on them in an assembly a week
prior to their regular campaign
speeches.
No Collegiate
The Collegiate will not be pub
lished the week of Spring Vaca
tion or the week after. The next
issue will be published on May
4, 1963.
Swindell Named
New ACC Dean
Dr. Lewis H. Swindell Jr., of the
department of education at East
Carolina College, has been named
dean of Atlantic Christian College,
according to an announcement by
Dr. Arthur D. Wenger, ACC presi
dent.
Commenting on Dr. Swindell’s ap
pointment, Dr, Wenger said,
“We are very pleased that Dr.
Swindell has accepte<t this responsi
ble position of leadership at Atlantic
Christian College. He brings to his
new post extensive administrative

For Last Of April
The Junior Class will entertain
the senior class at a dinner dance
on Friday April 26. The dinner and
dance will be held at the Wilson
Country Club from 6:30 p.m. until
12:00 midnight. The dinner will be
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the
dance will start at 8:00 p.m. and last
until 12 midnight. All seniors, juniors
and their dates are invited.
A junior or senior does not have
to have to invite someone that is
only in the Junior or Senior Class.
There will be a charge of $5 for
everyone attending with the excep
tion of seniors.
The Electras from Rocky Mount
will furnish the music for the even
ing. As for the attire, the dinner
dance will be semi-formal, cocktail
dresses and dark suits will be in
order for the occasion.
Mary Louise Westphal, chairman
of the dinner dance said, “I think
the dance will be a very successful
occasion and memorable evening for
the Seniors.”
Rex Horne, President of the Junior
Class, extends a cordial invitation
to all Seniors and Juniors and their
dates to the dance.
In order for anyone to attend the
dance, they must register at the
switch board in the Administration
Building. When a Junior or Senior
registers, he must indicate his clas
sification and that of his date. The
students desiring to attend the dance
should, also, pay at the time of
registration.
Peace Corps Test
A .special on-campus Peace
Corps Placement Test will be
given on Saturday, April 27, to
any interested students. Those
who would like to take the test

A native of Swan Quarter, N. C.,
he was graduated from Wake For
est College in 1940 witli the H. S.
degree. He earned tlie M. A. degree
at East Carolina College in 1948 and
the D. Ed. degree at the University
of North Carolina in 1961.
Dr. Swindell earlier taught science
and mathematics at Bolovia High
School. Farmville High School and
Washington high School, Wasliington,

World War II, he is a member of

Dr. Swindell is married to the for
mer Miss Estelle McBride of Man
chester, Tenn. They have three chil
dren, two girls and one boy. They
are members of the P^ethodist
Church.
Dr. Swindell will assume his du
ties as dean of Atlantic Christian
College on September 1 of this year.
