College One-hundred and eight-five seniors ■^ill receive baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences at the 62nd Commencement to be held at Atlantic Christian College on May 24. Commencement speaker will be Dr. James M. Moudy, vice chancel lor of Texas Christian University, Delivering the baccalaureate sermon will be Dr. Travis A. White, presi dent of Midwestern University. Both speakers will be awarded with the honorary degree, Doctor of Laws LL.D.). Presiding over commence ment exercises will be Dr. Arthur D. Wenger, president of the college. The Baccalaureate service will be held in the Ralph L. Richard Surles, Vice President, re ported on the United States National Student Association Annual Con gress which will be held in Min neapolis, Minnesota this summer. The Board voted to send Cookie Wickham, Secretary, as an alter nate to the two delegates,. Sammy Jones, N. S. A. Coordinator; and Lee Horne, President. The Board then elected by accla mation Kathy Traylor, Junior Sen- stor, as corresponding secretary. Stuart Lee, Sophomore President, made the notion that funds be pro vided for new boards and letters on the campus calendar. The mo tion passed. Gina Allen, Senior Senator, with the assistance of the Board, moved that Dean Bennett submit a recom mendation from the Executive Board to the Administrative Council give immediate consideration to looking into the telephone situation in the Women’s and Men’s Dormi tory. The Board concluded its busi- ness by passing this recommenda tion. Crenshaw of Nashville, Tenn., has been appointed assistant professor in the Department of Re ligion at Atlantic Christian College, according to Dr. Arthur D. Wenger, president of the college. A native of Cateeche, S. C. he was graduated magna cum laude from Furman University with the B. A. degree and was first in his class at Southern Baptist Semi nary where he was awarded the B. D. degree. He is currently com pleting his Ph. D. degree in Bibli cal Studies at Vanderbilt Universi ty. While studying at Vanderbilt he was a teaching assistant in New Testament in the Divinity School. Last Summer he did archeological work in Palestine on a fellowship from the Hebrew Union College Biblical and Archeological School in Jerusalem. According to Dr. William E. Tuck er, chairman of the ACC Depart ment of Religion and Philosophy, Crenshaw’s oppointment will streng then the department in the areas of Biblical languages. He will intro duce a two year course in New Testament Greek and will teach ad vanced courses in the Biblical area. The appointment also emphasizes the ACC Religion Department’s ap peal to students of all denomination al traditions. Crenshaw is a South ern Baptist, while other members of the department are members of the Methodist and the Christian Church es (Disciples of Christ). Bowers Speaks Dr. Fredson T. Bowers, chair man of the English department at the University of Virginia, was the keynote speaker at the annual Shakespeare Festival on May 8. Dr. Bowers received his degrees from Princeton, Harvard and Brown. The theme of the discussion was Hamlet. Following the talk a recept- tion was held for those in atten dance. The reception was given by the faculty of the English depart ment, and refreshments were served in the faculty lounge. Also on the program with Dr. Bowers was the school vocal en semble, which gave a program con sisting of songs popular during the Elizabethan period. intramural during the INTRAMURAL CHAMPS — Shown above is Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, winner of the championship trophy. The group compiled a total of 681 points. The trophy was presented annual awards day program last Tuesday. Intramural Awards Presented During Chapel Last Tuesday The annual Intramural Awards Day program was held in the gym- naisum at Atlantic Christian Col lege on Tuesday, May 12. As is tradition the Business Award, presented by the Chamber of Commerce in Wilson, was also given. William Gupton received this award which was presented by Wil liam C. Cooke of Wilson. In addition the Publications Awards were presented to all mem bers of the Collegiate and Pine Knot staffs for the 1963 - 64 academ ic year. The presentation of the Intramur al Championship Award was made by Dave Adkins. Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity won the trophy with a total of 681 points. Hackney Hall placed second with 679 points and Alpha Sigma Phi was third with 671 points. Mrs. William Smith Jr. gave a brief summary of the Women’s Rec reation Association at ACC and the events it sponsored this past year. Certificates were presented to deserving members of the WRA by Miss Marian G. Pulley, out-going president. WRA members receiving awards for participation in the individual sports were Jean Wagner, clock golf; George Ann Wilborne, shuf- fleboard; Margorie Owens, badmit- ton singles; Mary Westdale, table tennis. The team sports awards went to Delta Sigma Sorority, volley ten nis; Delta Sigma Sorority, volley ball; Independents, basketball; and Omega Chi, softball. Intramural representatives for the various campus organizations were announced. They are John Dollar, Hackney Hall; Doug Swain, Sigma Pi; Clem McLawhorn, Delta Sigma Phi; Bert Harrell, Day Stu dents; Jack Bardies, Alpha Sigma Phi; and Russ Miller, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Individual awards were presented to Sigma Phi Epsilon, which had 12 participants with 20 or more points; Hackney HaU, which had 10 participants with 20 or more points; Alpha Sigma Phi, 9 with 20 or more points; Delta Sigma Phi and Sigma Pi, 3 each with 20 or more points; and Day Students, 2 with 20 or more points. Team awards for Men’s Intra murals were Day Students, Clock- golf; Hackney Hall, flag football; Day Students, tennis; Hackney vol leyball; Hackney, turkey day race; Sigma Phi Epsilon, foul shooting; and Hackney, basketball. Also, Day students, table tennis; Alpha Sigma Phi, wrestling; Hack ney, horse shoes; Alpha Sigma Phi, badmitton and track and field; Hackney, softball; and Day stu dents, bowling. Gene Gregory won the Outstand ing Officials Award. Jack Bardies won the Outstanding Intramurals Pine Knots “The Pine Knots” are sched- duled to be shipped to Atlantic Christian College on May 18, according to Carolyn Camer on, editor. She said that the printers have advised her that they are making every effort to have them here before commencement and that as soon as they arrive notices will be placed on the bulletin board. As has been the cus tom, they will be given out in the lobby of the classroom building. This year’s “Pine Knot” promises to be one of the best ever. It will have a great deal of color photographs of the campus. Be sure and pick up your copy as soon as they arrive or authorize, in writing someone to pick up your copy for you. Athletic Award. The Day Students won the Sports manship Award. IRA P. NORFOLK Basketball Coach Is Appointed Here Ira P. Norfolk of Blacksburg, Va. has been appointed head bas ketball coach and director of athle tics at Atlantic Christian College, according to Dr. Arthur D. Wenger, president of the college. Dr. Wenger told The Collegiate Tuesday “The faculty athletic com mittee had recommended that we combine the athletic directorship with the post of head basketball coach and we believe that the ap pointment of Norfolk brings fine strength to both positions and will allow the college athletic program to develop in a wholesome way, con sistent with the aims and objec tives of Atlantic Christian College.” Presently Norfolk is serving as as sistant director of athletics and busi ness manager of athletics at Vir ginia Polytechnic Institute. He will assume his duties at ACC on Sept. 1, 1964. A native of Baltimore, Md. he received the A. B. degree from the University of North Carolina where he was a member of the 1945 South ern Conference Basketball cham pionship team and the 1946 NCAA Eastern Basketball championship team. As a head basketball coach he has accumulated a record of 281 victories and 66 losses in nine years. His teams have won 16 out of 21 tournaments. As coach of two All- Marine Corps championship teams he has participated in the National AAU Championships and the Pan- Am Trials.
