Faculty Focus
This week’s faculty focus is on
Mrs. Ruth Stokes.
Mrs. Stokes was born in
Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Her undergraduate work was
done at Hampton Institute where
she received a major in music
and a degree in Music
Education.
Mrs. Stokes taught in Rocky
Mount City Schools for a number
of years: before returning to
school. She went to the Eastman
School of Music for a Master’s
Degree in Music Literature and
Voice. On her return to North
Carolina she was hired by the
Wilson City Schools and
assigned to Darden Senior High
School. After merger of the
school system Mrs. Stokes went
to Fike High School. After two
years there she was reassigned
by the school board to Darden
Middle School.
Dr. Albert of the Atlantic
Christian College Music
Department heard of Mrs.
Stokes and asked her to come to
ACC as a part-time insturctor
and she accepted.
When asked about her post at
the college, the reply was, “I like
music therefore I like what I am
doing.”
Since Mrs. Stokes had written
a musical anthology of the songs
of Black people entitled,
“Sounds of the Black World”:
she was asked to speculate on
the future of similar works. She
felt that the musicals are
growing in number because they
are the results of the conditions
of Black people. Her ambition
for the future is to continue
performing. She has appeared in
California, North Carolina, and
Georgia and plans to go to
Washington, D.C.
Good Luck Mrs. Stokes
