Meredith Foiled By ACC

By I.KK.ll TAVI.OH
The Bulldog girls defeated
Meredith College 5-4 Sept. 27 to
pick up their first win of the
tennis season. Perhaps Mrs.
Smith should gaze into her
crystal ball to see what the
future holds for AC’s netters,
since as you know, she predicted
a victory for her team last week.
In the singles’ matches, ACC’s
girls polished off their opponents
4-2. Joan Adams, the number 1
player, again gunned down her
enemy by the score of 6-1 and 6-0.
In the number 2 spot, Patricia
Cloyd won her first singles
match of the season by riddling
her adversary 6-1, 6-4. The battle
of the number 3 girls turned out
to be a real dog-fight, as Gay
Robertson of AC prevailed by
burying her opponent on a
hillside 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Denise
Wineman played persistently on
the fourth court but lost her
match 3-6 and 2-6. Mary Beth
Bottoms was another first time
winner as she blasted her op
ponent out of the sky by winning
7-5, 6-2. Cindy Kramer filling in
the sixth spot lost her match 1-6
and 2-6.
The doubles matches didn’t
fair too well as Meredith gave
ACC the full throttle by picking
up wins in two of the three
matches. Joan Adams and
Patricia Cloyd lost their first
doubles match of the season 6-8.
The pairing of Gay Robertson
and Denise Wineman got
revenge on the Red Baron by
drilling Meredith’s duo 8-5.
Cindy Kramer and Connie
Turner lost 6-8 in their doubles
match.
The next girl’s extramural
tennis match will be Friday Oct.
5 at 2:30 here against UNC-
Wilmington. Stay tuned in for
next week’s episode of “Can
Coach Smith’s Crystal Ball Work
Again” or “The Red Baron
Returns.”

Pembroke Downs ACC 4 to 1
By ALLEN STALLINGS
Last Thursday afternoon
coach David Adkins' fighting
soccer team was hosted by
Pembroke State University and
was defeated by a score of 4-1.
At the outset of the game, the
Fighting Bulldogs scored first by
the determination of Salah Beh-
behani. The Bulldogs stayed
ahead until near the end of the
first half. Pembroke was given
two penalty shots, the first being
blocked by goalie Jerry Minton.
But the second made its point, to
bring the game to a 1-1 tie at the
close of the first half.
Throughout the first half, the
Bulldogs moved the ball with
authority and determination, but
they could not penetrate the
Pembroke defense.
The second half proved to be
unfavorable toward the
Bulldogs, as Pembroke soon
took control. W'ithin the first 10-
12 minutes of the second half,
they scored three quick goals
that stunned the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs fought back
heroically, but to no avail.
Pembroke played tough defense
and time was on their side. Time
did run out for AC as they were
defeated 4-1.
The Bulldogs have their work
cut out for them Friday as they
host Guilford. So the student
body should come out and
support your team this Friday at
4:00.
My congratulations go to
Jerry minton on a fine defensive
game and Salah Behbehani for
his score.
We know that you can bring us
a victory Friday and that we are
behind you all the way.

Hackney I won by forfeit. The
undefeated Scrackney’s of
Hackney (Roadside), defeated
the day students in what did not
have the glitter of previous
performances, 6-0. The score
came in the final seconds of the
game. After Bobby Fulcher and
Larry Russel led the team
downfield, ace quarterback Joey
Bright scored on a 4 yard drive
to clinch the contest. The out
standing Scrackney’s defense
did prove fatal for the day
students and the outstanding
nine have yet to be scored upon.
Mike McWeanie was the out
standing defensive player of the
game.
September 27
Sigma Pi won by forfeit. Alpha
Sigma Phi destroyed the Delta
Sigs, 27-0. After only a 7-0 lead in
the first half, the Alpha Sigs
exploded for 20 points, and an
easy win. Quarterback Steve
Morgan threw for all four touch
downs including two passes to
Ray Wilkins. The other two TD
passes were caught by John
Sally and Herbie Yeaman.
October t
The day students defeated
Waters I in a close battle, 13-9.
The Waters team played good
ball down to the wire. They were
successful in getting a safet;-,
but the powerful offense of the
day students was too much.
Sigma Phi Epsilon continued
their winning ways, as they
defeated Hackney 1, 20-0.
Quarterback Jimmy Lineberry
opened up the game, firing a 2!
yard pass to Peter Wakker.
After the defense, which has yet
to be scored on, got the bal
back, the big red machine
marched downfield and a 4 yard
pass to Flash Crocker put sis
more points on the scoreboard
and in the final quarter,
Lineberry sealed the contest oo
a 55 yard pass to Carl Jones.
